City News in 250 Words: Wednesday August 24

RAIL STRIKES will hit TransPennine Express services out of Manchester today as pay talks between members of the Aslef union and FTPE bosses broke down yesterday afternoon. The walkout is the first of two 24-hour strikes expected to cause disruption. A limited service will run between Sheffield and Manchester, as well as York, Leeds and Manchester. The second day of planned strike action is set to take place on Friday 26 August.

THE UNIVERSITY OF SALFORD is to get a new £38m arts centre. Planning permission has been granted for the building on University Road, which will house performance and exhibition spaces. The arts centre will be open for both university and community use. Work is due to begin in the autumn and should be completed by summer 2014.

A THIEF posing as a customer attacked a car saleswoman during a test drive in Salford on Saturday. The man punched and pulled the hair of the 47-year-old garage co-owner before driving off in the Audi A4 they were driving. The robber was described as white, 6ft tall, of slim build, aged in his mid 20s with short brown hair and a black tattoo on the back of his left hand.

PENSIONERS on mobility scooters could be tracked by sat-nav as part of council plans to cut spending on social care by £8.2m. The technology would mean that relatives could log onto the internet to locate their elders if they became lost or confused using the scooters satellite GPS tracking systems.

Fact of the day via @revealmcr: This week in 1984, the band James played an early gig at the Hacienda, Manchester, before supporting The Smiths on tour later that year.
