City News in 250 Words: Wednesday 23 November

THREE women have been charged after a MAC 10 machine pistol was found under the bed at a house in Longsight. Police had searched the house on Sunday evening after a tip-off. The SAS issue firearm, which fires over 1,000 rounds a minute, was found alongside a Baikal 4.5mm air pistol, a noise suppressor, and ammunition. The women have been charged with two counts of possession of prohibited weapons and have been remanded in custody.

OFF-ROAD biker Ryan Ward, who drove through Harpurhey with a three-year-old boy perched on his petrol tank, has been jailed. The 23-year-old admitted several driving offences, child cruelty and possession of a firearm. Ward was filmed by police helicopter in June as he tore through the streets with the toddler, who was not wearing a helmet, sat behind the handlebars. He was jailed for five years and four months at Manchester Crown Court.

THE University of Manchester is to recruit 100 new academic staff members. The new personnel, who will be used across a number of departments to improve teaching and research, will cost around £20m.
