City News in 250 Words: Friday October 7

THE Bramhall man arrested on suspicion of murder for stabbing an intruder in his home last month acted in self defence, according to the Crown Prosecution Service. Vincent Cooke, 39, will face no further action after the case was dropped. Mr Cooke told police he stabbed Raymond Jacob to protect his wife and 12-year-old son. The ‘Give Vincent Cooke a Medal Not a Prison Sentence’ Facebook page has more than 5,000 supporters.

THE BBC is moving a further 1,000 jobs to MediaCity in Salford as part of a restructure of the company. The cost-saving measures will see BBC 3, Radio 4 show ‘You and Yours’ and a number of administrative staff move up from London. The BBC needs to cut £670m a year from its budget by 2017.

FOLLOWING this week's annual conference, the Conservatives have decided to return to the city in 2013 and 2015. The party will hold the events at the Manchester Central Convention Complex again. The deal is estimated to be worth £55m to the local economy. The four-day conference saw city centre streets closed off and a heightened police presence in the area.

WAYNE Rooney’s dad and uncle were arrested in connection with a betting probe yesterday. Merseyside Police arrested nine men following investigations into betting irregularities in a Scottish Premier League match. Motherwell midfielder Steve Jennings is among those arrested after concerns were raised over betting patterns for a match that saw him sent off for allegedly accusing the referee of “cheating” his team.

It's the city, duffusOctober 7th 2011.

Conservatives to return to Manchester for future conferences? That must clearly be a good indicator of how well that part of town works for what it is.

All we can hope for is that the likes of the Hilton will not dither and pay their electricity bills on time, not to be cut off again...

Oh no!

Not You and Yours.

London really is getting rid of all the rubbish.

If you've never heard You and Yours it always includes the sentence 'Did you know it is possible to set up as a tarot card reader/barber/sweet shop owner/handyman/pizza delivery boy without any formal qualifications at all?'

The Conservatives are coming to shut down the city centre again? Brilliant!

...and to bring lots of much-needed money into a city that is suffering badly. Still, if it means a detour on your way to work for a few days every two years, let's not make them welcome eh?

IT WAS MORE THAN A DETOUR AND ADDED AN HOUR TO MY JOURNEY EVERY DAY. I DON'T OBJECT TO THEM HAVING THE CONFERENCE ITS JUST THE FACT THAT THE ROADS WERE CLOSED. IT NEEDED A BIT OF FORWARD PLANNING I.E. LET THEM DO PARK AND RIDE SO IT DIDN'T IMPACT ON EVERYONE ELSE.
THIS IS ON TOP OF A MAIN WAY INTO WORK BEING CLOSED IN ATHERTON DUE TO THE BRIDGE BEING REBUILT FROM SPETEMBER TO DECEMBER, ROADWORKS ON CHAPEL STREET TO CHANGE 2 LANES INTO ONE EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE NEEDED AND BEING STUCK COMING OFF THE M61 EXIT AS A RESULT FOR ANOTHER HOUR!!! STARTED MY JOURNEY 6 IN THE MORNING DIDNT GET BACK UNTIL 8 BECAUSE HAD TO PULL OFF THE MOTORWAY AND WAIT TO GO HOME!!!!

This is 2011 - we could plan better! I support the conference season and the money it brings in, plus the free promotion Manchester gets... but it should be able to go ahead without interrupting normal life. Good news on the Beeb moving so many more jobs up here. Sorry if you're affected and don't want to move, but good news for Manchester and Salford :)
