A MAN is recovering in hospital after a machete attack in Salford. Police found the injured man at his home on Haddon Street, Lower Broughton at about 9pm last night. His injuries are not thought to be life threatening. Eyewitnesses said a neighbour was also injured in the incident and a dog was shot. The dog is recovering after treatment.

A TEENAGER who was beaten up in an “unprovoked attack” in Hyde has said he believes the incident was racial motivated. Daniel Stringer-Prince, 17, was assaulted by a gang of young Asian men on Saturday. He was left with a broken eye socket and a fractured skull after the attack. Police have confirmed the incident is being treated as a hate crime, and a 21-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault.

TWISTED WHEEL DJ, Pete Roberts, is fighting to save the former home of the iconic 60s soul club on Whitworth Street. The building, which housed The Twisted Wheel from 1965 to 1971, has been acquired by developers Olympian Homes, who are considering plans for a 330-room hotel. Roberts said the loss would be akin to the demolition of the original Cavern Club in Liverpool.

Council chiefs have unveiled their answer to the housing crisis by announcing plans for a ‘Manchester mortgage’ for first time buyers. £25m of pension cash will be used to build nearly 250 new homes and council bosses hope to introduce a new mortgage guarantee scheme to help people get onto the property ladder.

This week in 1970: George Best scored six goals as Manchester United beat Northampton Town 8-2.
