TWO MEN from Warrington have been jailed for inciting disorder and looting on Facebook. Jordan Blackshaw, 21, and Perry Suttcliffe-Keenan, 22, were both sentenced to four years in a decision Judge Elgan Edwards hopes will act as a deterrent to others. Blackshaw had created a Facebook event called “Smash d[o]wn in Northwich Town.” Both men pleaded guilty under the Serious Crime Act to intentionally encouraging another to assist the commission of an indictable offence.
EXTRA POLICE OFFICERS will remain on the streets of Manchester for the ‘foreseeable future’ as part of the citiy’s riot recovery. Police have confirmed that an increased presence will remain in Manchester and Salford over the coming weeks, including the Bank Holiday weekend. The decision means that high visibility patrols will continue in areas worst affected by last week’s rioting.
THE CHAIRMAN of Greater Manchester Fire Authority at the centre of a row over an expenses claim has resigned. Councillor Fred Walker will stand down next month. Mr Walker had submitted a claim for £20,000 worth of expenses over a three-year period. He said the expenses issue had caused a loss of confidence among members of the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities.
MANCHESTER CITY’S sponsorship deal with Etihad is to be analysed by Uefa’s financial fair play boss. City reportedly agreed a 10-year deal worth £400m from the Abu Dhabi based airline raising questions that it infringes Uefa’s regulations. Clubs are not allowed to accept deals with ‘related parties’ unless they are at ‘fair market value’.
Fact of the day: This week in 1872 a male assistant at Kendal’s was horsewhipped by a lady, for jilting her and for ‘circulating a scandalous report’ about her.
