City News In 250 Words: Wednesday 14 September

THE NURSE suspended in the Stepping Hill saline case will hear today if she can return to work. Rebecca Leighton, of Heavily, Stockport, spent six weeks in prison before a lack of evidence forced charges against her to be dropped. The interim order suspending her from nursing is due to be reviewed by the Nursing and Midwifery Council today. She was facing allegations of tampering with saline solution at the hospital. 

MANCHESTER is hosting an online experiment today in order to measure the mood of people in the city. Participants are asked to give an indication of their mood using a colour wheel designed to measure happiness and well-being. Those taking part will choose a colour at 9am, do something they would normally do, and then choose again at 3pm. The experiment has been devised by Manchester Academic Health Science Centre – a partnership between the university and six NHS organisations. 

CANCELLED plans to create a North West regional fire control centre have been revived. The government had called off the move despite the completion of a new building to house the control room in Warrington. But now local fire services in Cheshire, Cumbria, Lancashire, Merseyside and Greater Manchester are proposing a move from local control rooms to a regional control centre by 2014. 

A GREAT-GRANDMOTHER who has just celebrated her 106th birthday has revealed that her secret to a long life is gin and tonic. Kate Wright, who lives at Pymgate House nursing home in Stockport, enjoys the drink everyday. 

FACT OF THE DAY: This week in 1842 The first Manchester and Salford Regatta was held on the River Irwell.
