City News In 250 Words: Thursday 27 October

NOEL Gallagher, in a bold move, decided to instantly divide his fans at his comeback gig at the Apollo last night. The ex-Oasis singer/songwriter decided to walk on stage to Manchester City’s anthem, Blue Moon. The move acted as a painful reminder to some Manchester United fans in the audience of City’s emphatic win over them at the weekend.

A FATHER from Oldham has flown to Pakistan in a desperate attempt to rescue his youngest brother. Naveed Hamid, 24, received a call from Police in Pakistan to inform him that his Parents, younger sister and brother had all been brutally murdered in a targeted knife attack. The youngest brother, Adeel, 8, escaped the massacre by hiding in a clay oven but is thought to still be a target by the gang of murderers.

A FLOOD has left 1400 homes in Wythenshaw without gas for the fourth day in a row. Engineers have attempted to restore services to each house individually with elderly and vulnerable people taking top priority. The energy agencies are providing affected residents with electric cooking rings and heaters until usual service can be restored.

STAFF at Selfridges are being taught basic Mandarin in an attempt to deliver greater service to Chinese shoppers. An increased number of Chinese students fueled the move, which has resulted in the store drafting in experts from Manchester Universities’ Confucius Institute. Sales staff are being taught how to greet customers, ask if they require any assistance and to also recognize Chinese shopping habits.

FACT OF THE DAY: This week in 1868 the foundation stone of the new Town Hall, Albert Square, Manchester, was laid.
