City News In 250 Words: Thursday 10 November

AFTER BEING CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC for 134 years, Manchester Town Hall's historic clock tower is now set to open. Visitors will be guided up the 280ft tower to visit the 24 magnificent Manchester bells and clock-face set up high over Manchester with panoramic views. The guided tours start next week with the £7.50 trip cost going toward the Town Hall to help meet budget cuts.

PEEL ENERGY PLAN TO BUILD a biomass incinerator at Barton Bridge in Trafford. The plant will generate electricity for an estimated 37,000 homes by burning waste wood. Locals have collated 5,000 signatures on a petition against the plant after concerns were raised about pollutants being pumped into the air close to residents homes.

UNITED UTILITIES HAS LAUNCHED their Get Winter Wise campaign by unveiling a three tonne ice sculpture at Piccadilly Station. The frosty figures took 60 hours to create and were carved using chainsaws, blowtorches and a steak knife. The campaign aims to encourage people to protect their homes from frozen and burst water pipes as temperatures drop over the coming winter months.

CARLOS TEVEZ COULD FACE a gross misconduct charge after a no-show at training yesterday. He now faces a fine from City of up to six weeks wages minimum. The news follows a recent disciplinary after Tevez failed to attend a warm up in Bayern Munich. The player announced he had flown to Argentina to see his family and tried countless times to speak to Roberto Mancini with no success.

Fact of the day: 9 November 1909 Salford-born architect Thomas Worthington died. His designs include the Albert Memorial, Albert Square & Minshull St Courts.
