MANCHESTER’S WANTED LIST: Greater Manchester Police is appealing for information about twelve people wanted in connection with a number of offences. Manchester’s most wanted criminals can be seen by visiting Greater Manchester Police’s Most Wanted website at www.gmp.police.uk/wanted.Inspector Phil McDonald said: “We hope that by using tactics such as these those people can be brought to justice.”

EMERGENCY WATER WORKS are taking place on Oxford Road, near the Palace Theatre. United Utilities is working to repair an underground water meter chamber from today until 25 August. The work will affect a 30m section of the city-bound side of the road but has to be carried out to prevent serious damage to the road.

SEXUAL ASSAULT IN SALE: A teenage girl was sexually assaulted by a taxi driver in Sale in the early hours of 26 July, a police report has confirmed. The 19-year-old was picked up outside Tiger Tiger in Manchester city centre by the driver who then took her to a house on Alexandra Road and sexually assaulted her on the street outside the house. Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0161 856 7897.

ATOMIC BOMB COMMEMORATION: A ceremony to remember the victims of the atomic bombs that fell on Hiroshima and Nagasaki 66 years ago, will take place at the Friends Meeting House, Mount Street, at 7pm on Tuesday 9 August. The ceremony will be led by the Lord Mayor of Manchester, Cllr Harry Lyons JP and is open to all members of the public.

This week in 1885: Manchester Ship Canal Bill received royal assent. The canal allowed Manchester manufacturers to avoid heavy taxes at Liverpool.
