A SWINTON LIONS rugby league player died after his car was involved in a crash in Warrington this weekend. Dana Wilson, 28, who played for Swinton Lions, died following the crash on Fareshaw Lane, Burtonwood. Wilson moved to the UK from New Zealand in 2005 and played for several clubs before joining Swinton. The club said his death had rocked it "to its foundations". 

POLICE in Rochdale are urging the public to hand in medication after it was reported lost at 11.55pm on Friday 2 September 2011. A quantity of tablets, labelled Sitralapram, Pro-promalol, Sertraline and Trifluoperazine were lost on a bus travelling from Rochdale town centre to the Langley Estate, Middleton between 2pm and 3pm that day. 

ACCORDING to the BBC Stockport Council is planning to cut a further 160 jobs in order to find an additional £13.5m in savings. The authority announced in May that it would need to cut a maximum of 350 jobs, with former leader Dave Goddard saying it was "good at managing money". However, the Council has now announced it needs to cut a further 6% of its total spending. 

GREATER MANCHESTER, already the capital of British ale, has gained another micro-brewery. Wayne Roper and Shaun Reynolds have started brewing their own beer commercially after setting up Blackedge Brewery in Hampson Street, Horwich, making hand-crafted real ales. This lifts the number of real ale brewers in Greater Manchester to well over 20, including the four major family brewers of Robinson, Holt, Hydes and Lees. 

THIS WEEK IN 1768, Christian VII, King of Denmark, visited Manchester, and lodged at the Bull’s Head, a pub in the Market Place. He's pictured above minutes before being told to dress down for the boozer as that orb was really taking things too far.
