A BRITISH muslim convert and a Taliban veteran have been found guilty of planning acts of terrorism. Matthew Newton, from Stalybridge, and his mentor Munir Farooqi, of Longsight, were caught running market stalls in the city centre and Longsight, which they were using to recruit volunteers to go to Afghanistan and kill British troops. The pair were convicted at Manchester Crown Court and will be sentenced once the trial concludes.

THE Manchester skyline is set for a major overhaul after the Co-operative Group revealed their plans for future development. The 15-year plan aims to renovate a 20-acre area around Victoria Station at a cost of around £800 million. Planned developments include hotels, cafes, independent shops and green spaces. The plans, known as NOMA, will also create 4 million sq ft of office space. 

TODAY marks the fifth anniversary of the murder of schoolboy Jessie James. Family and friends are to hold a memorial service at the West Indian Centre in Moss Side, the place where he had partied on the night he was shot. The case remains unsolved and a £50,000 reward is available for information that leads to the killer’s capture. 

PLANS for a new 7-storey Arts Building at the University of Salford have been given the go-ahead. The building will house the University’s Music, Performing Arts and Art & Design departments and will be completed in 2014. The project marks the first step in plans to redevelop the University campus and will cost an estimated £35 million.

This week in 1858 The annual show of the Manchester and Liverpool Agricultural Society was held at Longsight.
