SEVERE gales tore the roof off a rugby clubhouse in Oldham yesterday. THE stronger than forecast winds, which were worst in Scotland and the north of England, caused damage across Greater Manchester. Volunteers working inside Oldham Rugby Union Club at the time were unhurt when the roof over their heads blew away. The clubhouse had recently been renovated and the roof was only three years old. 

WORKERS are back on strike in Manchester in a row over pensions, but this time they are from the private sector. Employees at Unilever’s Manchester factory have joined their colleagues across the country and downed tools for 24 hours. More than 2,500 staff nationwide are participating in the action over the company’s final salary pension scheme. 

MANCHESTER has been designated as one of the country’s ‘core cities’ as part of the Government’s latest plans to boost the economy. The cities will receive special status and will have greater financial freedom from central government. It is hoped this will help boost growth by giving councils more input into how they raise and invest their money. 

A CARELESS criminal is in jail after photos of him posing in a stolen car lead to his arrest.  Dean Fallows, of Gorton, posted pictures of himself sitting behind the wheel of the Audi A3 on Facebook in order to show off to friends. The 20-year-old said he was only in the car for a few seconds but was jailed for 15 months for handling stolen goods.

This week in 1859 Thomas de Quincey died. Born in Manchester, he wrote the autobiographical ‘Confessions of an English Opium-Eater’.
