City News In 250 Words: Friday 28 October

A MAN has been jailed for three years for his role in encouraging the riots in Manchester earlier this year. Philip Burgess, from Salford, used Facebook to call for rioting in the city in order to “put Manchester back on the map.” Hours after these comments were posted, the city was beset by disorder - just as he instructed. Judge Michael Henshell said it only needed one or two people to read Burgess’ comments for there to be potential for public mischief.

A DOUBLE-LUNG transplant patient who inspired thousands to donate organs has died, aged 23, with her parents at her bedside. Rachael Wakefield, from Dukinfield, was one of the youngest people ever to undergo the procedure and and appeared to be doing well. However, earlier this year she was told her lungs would not recover from a series of infections and there was no chance of another transplant.

DESPITE angry protests, FC United were granted permission to build a £3.5million stadium at a council meeting yesterday. Fans celebrated after plans for a 5,000 capacity stadium in Moston were approved. Opponents argued building a stadium on the Ronald Johnson playing fields would destroy a local beauty spot. They said they plan to persue legal action to overturn the decision.

THE Halloween Spooky Spectacular at Old Trafford Cricket Club, planned for tomorrow, will not go ahead. Organisers Normandy Marsworth Ltd cancelled the event at short notice, blaming circumstances outside their control. Those who purchased tickets will get a full refund.

FACT OF THE DAY: This week in 1865 The Queen of the Sandwich Islands (Hawaiian Islands) visited Manchester.
