A BABY who spent the first 100 days of his life in hospital has returned home. Acer Walton was the last baby to spend so long in care at Salford Royal before the special baby care unit closed. He still requires constant care and oxygen after being born 11 weeks premature, but doctors have said Acer can be cared for at home. Nurses still visit daily to check on him.

A CHRISTMAS crackdown on drink driving was launched by Greater Manchester Police yesterday. They aim to educate road users in the risks of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and cut down on the number of deaths caused by intoxicated motorists. Last years campaign saw more than 7,000 cars stopped, with roughly one in ten drivers found to be over the limit.

FORMER Smiths' guitarist Johnny Marr has been banned from driving for eight weeks after being caught doing 72mph on a 40mph road. Magistrates decided not to impose the maximum penalty of a 6-month ban, disqualifying him for 56 days instead. Marr pleaded guilty to speeding on Princess Parkway in April but was not present in court.

MANCHESTER United star Wayne Rooney won a court battle against his former representatives after they claimed he owed them £4.3million. The Court of Appeal ruled that Proactive’s image rights agreement was unenforceable and decided to uphold Rooney’s appeal, except for one point. Rooney and his wife, Coleen, were required instead to pay a combined £95,000 to Proactive.

This week in 1875 a statue of Oliver Cromwell was given to the citizens of Manchester, positioned first near the Cathedral then in Wythenshawe Park.
