A GIANT MCR Loves Christmas advent calendar is being set up in Piccadilly Gardens. It will help city dwellers to count down to Christmas, starting on Thursday 1 December. The gigantic calendar will reveal festive messages, promote events and publish bargains for passersby. Alongside the advent calendar a family fun fair returns to Piccadilly Gardens, open from 1 December until 2 January.

VOLUNTEER CIVIL SERVANTS will carry out border checks at Manchester Airport during tomorrow´s public sector strike. The 24 hour strike is a part of a row over pensions and is almost all UK Border Agency staff expected to walk out. Terminal 3 may have to be closed down tomorrow and passengers should be prepared for up to an hour delay.

A 26 YEAR old man needed over 150 stitches after a vicious attack in Burnage. He had gone out with his brother to buy cigarettes when they were attacked from behind by a group on 12 November. He got cuts on his face and neck and his brother was punched and kicked to the ground. The extremely violent attack is thought to have been unprovoked and motiveless.

BECKY TIPPER, PHD researcher from The University of Manchester has won first prize in the Flash Fiction category at The Bridport Prize awards. Tipper won a £1,000 award for her story 'Meeting the Lobster'. The competition attracts thousands of entries each year and is considered to be one of Europe´s most prestigious open literary awards.

This week in 1999: The Professional Footballers´ Association bought the Lowry painting 'Going to the Match' (of Bolton´s Burnden Park) for £1.9m.
