Published on January 13th 2012.

Bus Crashes Into Bull's Head Pub, Piccadilly

A DOUBLE-DECKER bus has crashed into a pub close to Piccadilly Station. The accident happened just before noon today.

Here are some pictures, Confidential is presently confirming details as to the exact nature of what happened. The story will be updated as it unfolds.

Preliminary accounts say the bus went out of control and went straight into the pub without slowing down.

A spokeswoman for Stagecoach said: "We can confirm that an out-of-service vehicle has been involved in an incident at around midday today on London Road  in which the vehicle has hit a building. The bus was empty, however we believe the driver has been injured. Our immediate thoughts are for the welfare of our driver and anyone else involved in the incident."

The press office for North West Ambulance Service say that the driver has gone to Manchester Royal Infirmary with back injuries.

The driver, around fifty years of age, had to be cut free from the bus.

There are presently severe problems with traffic congestion around the site of the accident.

BBC report that Stagecoach have confirmed only the driver was on board.

As a pedestrian and cyclist, I've often felt that buses without any passengers end up being driven in a very dangerous way; harsh acceleration and careering around corners...

Not just empty buses either. Wilmslow road is just carnage around rush hour. I'll cycle down any road but that, and regularly make 20 minute detours to avoid it.

They drive like that with passengers on sometimes.

I had one in Warrington nearly drive head on into me at Christmas. I was waiting to turn right into Asda and he swerved straight over to the other side of the road and nearly hit the side of my car. I called WBT up and went mad with them over it, I presume as it was Christmas Eve the driver was in a rush to finish.

Heart attacks are the usual reaction to hearing how much a bus ticket costs.

So true - I drive HGVs and there's no way I'd put up with the schedules that coach drivers are forced to race around on.

i don't think a bus driver having a severe heart attack in an icident where fortunately no one was injured should become the focus of anger about how buses generally drive TBF!

David LaffertyJanuary 13th 2012.

Agree with Morgan. This is not a forum for disgruntled cyclists or generalisations about dangerous bus drivers.

And anyway as i driver i have seen how Cyclists ride on the roads. My favorite being this morning when a cyclist kicked my passenger door for no apparent reason waking my 2 year old who started crying he then gave me the finger as he passed!! wet himself after when he stopped at the lights my 6 foot 5 frame got out to have a word... hope the bus drivers ok!!!

There probably was a reason. It just wasn't apparent to you. Were you leaving safe amount of room when you passed him?

shabob1January 13th 2012.

Oh thats good enough reason to kick a car door with a small child on the other side - get a grip Anonymous.

I read this as 'Large man cuts up cyclist and doesn't even realise - then physically threatens cyclist when he has the gumption to actually complain.'
I'm possibly going over the top for effect there, but it seems far more likely than a cyclist randomly swerving out, putting himself in danger, just to kick your car door.

AnonymousJanuary 13th 2012.

Driver sounds totally oblivious to other road users. Shouldn't be on the road. Decent enough reason to me.

JimmyJanuary 13th 2012.

Believe it or not it's fairly dangerous for cyclists when you drive alongside them and then decide to pull left and reduce the space they've got to ride in. You'd be amazed how many drivers do this at lights, I wonder if you did the same.

AnonymousJanuary 13th 2012.

cyclist are a pain in the ass. They don't pay road tax yet they cycle in the middle of the road. Some of you should be banned from cycling, you are utter pests

GimboidJanuary 14th 2012.

"They don't pay road tax"
Nobody pays road tax, there's no such thing in the UK.

To be honest, so many people are willing to judge and comment without the facts, at the end of the day a man was hurt, and my heart goes out to his wife and family.

Reopen soon, with a sense of humor like a very well known pub here in Philly did when hit by a bus: www.nbcphiladelphia.com/…/turday-100638784.html…

NickJanuary 13th 2012.

Buses do drive too fast but it's entirely possible that the bloke did indeed have a heart attack. Many cyclists are just as bad as some bus drivers in other ways (red lights mean stop). I hope the driver is ok and at his age, it's hopefully not a health problem that could put him out of work.

I hope the driver of the bus recovers.
Regarding cyclists, it's the same as drivers - some are good and some should even be allowed on the roads.

Pete RansomJanuary 13th 2012.

Nice to hear so many people have bypassed any thought of waiting to see what the reason for the crash was and are jumping in with implications that the man was driving the bus too quickly. Any thought to hoping that the driver recovers quickly??

Steven KellyJanuary 13th 2012.

Well - I have been both a bus driver, car driver, van driver, pedestian and a cyclist and the way I see it everyone needs to be more careful and pay attention to whats going on around you. Think Safety.

I can't believe how heartless some of these comments are! I just hope none of these heartless people who are so quick to judge others ever have to experience a heart attack at the wheel! Speedy recovery to the driver.

I agree, there are some very selfish people on here who only care about themselves and their opinions. shame on them!
If people decided to get their heads out of their butts and stop thinking about "me me me", the world would be a nicer and kinder place.

I am a bus driver and drive round Manchester, cars/bikes/cyclists and buses all in tight confined area it only takes one daft person to make a good day bad. I see on the roads every day a car speed round me to get to a red light that 2 seconds before me putting himself and others at risk, cyclists swerving and jumping lights, people not looking where there going and stepping infront of traffic. The point is a man was hurt in a accident regardless of what mode of transport was, lucky no one was killed. pointing fingers with out facts and stereotyping helps no one and no one can say they have never taken a risk on the road, just because you got away with it doesnt mean you can all the time.
