Bmibaby pulls out of Manchester

Low cost carrier to focus on ‘established’ airports

Published on April 14th 2011.

Bmibaby pulls out of Manchester

BMIBABY will no longer fly from Manchester or Cardiff from the end of this summer. The low cost airline currently operates 40 flights per week from Manchester and employs 97 staff.

The airline’s two Boeing 737s currently based at Manchester will be moved to Belfast, Birmingham and East Midlands airports from this winter.

Bmibaby, which was recently bought by Lufthansa, said the decision has been made in light of the current economic climate, which makes it essential for them to focus on airports where the airline is well established and has better potential for growth.

This decision will come as a blow to Manchester Airport, especially in the competition against Liverpool’s low-cost offering. According to their statement, Manchester Airport said it understood the reasons behind bmibaby’s departure. The airport also said bmibaby’s routes will continue to be served by other carriers in the winter, and that Manchester continues to see ‘good rates of growth’ from the other low cost airlines based there.

Andrew Harrison, chief executive of Manchester Airport, said: “We are confident of a strong summer programme that will still include bmibaby.”

Bmibaby said cabin crew and pilots and some engineers and airport services staff based at Manchester will be offered posts elsewhere and British Midland International, bmibaby’s parent company, will maintain its presence in Manchester.
