Betfred opens 850th branch

New store is ‘best ever, says Done

Betfred opens 850th branch

Manchester-based bookmaker Fred Done opened his 850th shop this month, launching a new store in the city centre.

Betfred has taken over the former HSBC Bank unit on High Street, next door to Debenhams’ department store – its biggest unit to date. Done said the new shop was the firm’s ‘best ever.’

“I started with just one shop in 1967 and I am proud to open my best ever premises in the centre of Manchester,” he said. “I’m a proud Mancunian and the city’s punters can now watch sport in real comfort and spacious surroundings. Betting shops have come on a long way in 43 years.”

To mark the opening, punters were treated to a Q&A with former Manchester Utd star Denis Irwin and Gary Owen, the ex-Manchester City player. Professional darts player Peter Manley was also on hand for a one-dart challenge.

The new store means that Betfred now has three shops within 200 yards of each other – there are branches on Fountain Street and Oldham Street.
