Deansgate has always done well on the Christmas lights front. Being long and straight helps a lot – the cumulative effect of banner after banner of pretty blue lights makes this thoroughfare one of the most festive in the city.
This year, however, the decorations are in another league entirely, thanks to the efforts made by Barton Arcade. The shopping centre, which sits between St Ann's Square and Deansgate, has been covered in a sparkling shroud of 24,000 white LED lights. They cover the entire front and back of the building in a spectacle that looks more like an art installation than a mere Christmas display.
It's all part of Barton Arcade's push to increase its profile in the city. They've got several new shops in there now and a restaurant owned by the Circle Club will open there in the New Year. Their Christmas lights are well worth a gander; go and have a look tonight.

Barton Arcade has listened and reacted again this year with the illuminations to light up our bit of the city, MERRY CHRISTMAS and welcome to THe Barton Arcade !!!!!!!!!!
What's 'realist' on about? Barton Arcade isn't full of empty units...there's only one isn't there?
The Barton Arcade really has upped the anti with its Christmas light display. I was talking to a friend the other day with regards to our experience of Christmas lights displays in New York. The retailers really g to town which proves to be a real draw for retail tourists, it maybe that the Barton Arcade has offered a challenge to other traders to follow suit in Manchester.
Hi,Love the look of Barton arcade, shame it's full of empty units (landlords want too much money) and no customers. They need to find their niche and quick, otherwise it will end up just like the Triangle down the road.
It looks gorgeous- it seems like the landlords have really got their act together and the place seems to have some direction... agree with Cllr Mike Amsbury- would be nice to see other traders doing the same!
