Alchemist evacuated after chemical scare

The Alchemist on Spinningfields has been evacuated and closed as staff were exposed to an unknown chemical which made them feel ill.

Police and fire crews turned up at the bar this afternoon to treat staff and check the venue. Several staff were being treated by ambulance crews for sickness although nobody was seriously hurt or injured.

The area to the side of 3 Hardman Street has also been closed off and sandwich provider Pret a Manger has been evacuated.

Jeremy Roberts, Director, Living Ventures who own The Alchemist has said: “As a result of a chemical reaction following a spillage of cleaning materials this morning in the kitchen at The Alchemist, two kitchen staff were sent to hospital for precautionary checks as they were in the immediate vicinity and two further members of staff who have an asthmatic history were also sent as a precaution. All now fine.”

The Daily Mail was clearly right to worry us all about the impending doom from the nuclear "death cloud" coming over from Japan. God help us all, he's our only hope.

Coming up on Manchester Confidential - "Empty Milk Carton Put Back in Office Fridge". To your credit this was also the lead story on the MEN website so i suppose that makes it news doesnt it? If only all your stories were so easy to cover eh? In other news - can we somehow blame Peel for this?

EditorialMarch 30th 2011.

We got the story up before the MEN, Eddy.

One of those rare times when news happens right in front of you.

It doesn't make it any less newsworthy - we'd argue a chemical spill affecting two well-know places in Manchester's central business district is of public interest - although perhaps you'd like to suggest a minimum distance on events we can cover?

I blame Peel.

You keep on doing what you a doing - ignore me- im just kidding with you. Seeing as no one was seriously hurt can we not start making puns about alchemy and nasty chemicals or something?

Unless you were actually on fire. Then we'll talk.

I was a club last weekend and the roof, the root, the roof was on fire - but it didn't warrant any news coverage.
