Airport still without Tripoli route

Manchester’s Libyan community forced to use other airports to get home

Published on March 2nd 2011.

Airport still without Tripoli route

Manchester’s Airport’s route to Tripoli in Libya has not been in operation for over a week.

The usually five-times a week Libyan Airlines service between the two cities has not flown since February 21, as the troubles escalate.

According to an airport spokesman, the last flight came in with around 50 people on it, and left with around eight people on board – mostly pilots and crew.

“The service was cancelled the following morning and we were keeping an eye on the other services that were scheduled for Thursday and Friday but they were cancelled too,” said the spokesman.

“Servisair are their handling agents here and were checking with Tripoli to get the latest on a regular basis but, not surprisingly, Tripoli Airport has been a tad busy.”Manchester has the largest number of Libyan immigrants in the UK, so attempts to get between the two cities have continued despite the cancellation of the service.

The airport said people had been getting back from Tripoli via different routes, through Amsterdam and London. “Some seem to have been oil workers but there also seems to be a large Libyan population in North Manchester,” said the spokesman.

The Foreign Office is currently discouraging anyone from flying to Libya from England, unless the journey is absolutely essential.

The majority of British nationals who want to leave the country are understood to have done so, through commercial means, Government charters and military evacuations. Small numbers remain, however.
