The mosaics are gone, and the name's shorter, but rest assured Afflecks itself is here to stay, firm in its place as a Manchester institution.
The new owners of the iconic building, have organized a day of music and art to celebrate a new era of the famous emporium this Saturday.
Afflecks Day has been created to rest the minds of the loyal supporters of the venue, “Afflecks Day is the stallholder’s way of thanking everyone in Manchester for their continued support. We also want to get people down to see that the legend continues and to celebrate everything Afflecks. We want to make this market bigger and better and hope Afflecks Day will help us on our way,” said new Afflecks Manager Tony Martin.
Afflecks Day has been organized by the stallholders in the building, and the new owner, Bruntwood, who took over the venue on April 1 from Elaine Walsh who ran Afflecks since the 1980s.
The famous mosaics which adorned the side of the building were removed by Walsh left, as they are still owned by her, and creator Mark Kennedy.
Bruntwood are planning to fill the space once occupied by the mosaics with artwork from local artists in the Northern Quarter.
Local artists, musicians, and DJs will be providing the entertainment, and all visitors will have their picture taken to be included in a piece of artwork to be permanently displayed in Afflecks.
