SALFORD City Council have approved 1000 new flats to be built on the car park between the five-star Lowry Hotel and The Edge luxury apartments by the River Irwell.
“We believe our revised proposals for new apartments and commercial space will revitalise this site and play a major role in the on-going regeneration of the Chapel Street corridor and central Salford”
The new Chapel Wharf scheme by Dandara - developers behind the nearby Spectrum scheme and Castlefied's St George's Island apartments - will see four tower blocks up to 22-storeys high built on the Chapel Street site.

Back in June 2014, Confidential revealed Dandara's new intentions for the site after plans for a 37-storey tower lodged a decade earlier were scrapped following a market downturn.
However, planning consent still existed for the four-acre site with plans by architectural firm, Axis Mason, finally gaining approval last week.
The scheme will include studio, one, two and three-bed apartments alongside 16,000 sq ft of commerical ground floor units.
Thankfully, the scheme will also see the ugly vacant office and warehouse space blighting the entrance to the hotel demolished (you mean the interesting Modernist buildings at The Lowry Hotel entrance? Ed.)

Martin Brown of Dandara said: “We believe our revised proposals for new apartments and commercial space will revitalise this site and play a major role in the on-going regeneration of the Chapel Street corridor and central Salford.”
Objections to the proposals were received from residents of the neighbouring Edge and Century Buildings apartments, citing loss of view and sunlight.
Still, with plans getting the go-ahead it seems Dandara's major new development will prove a harsh lesson to those who buy next to a car park/building plot so close to the city centre.

Vast improvement on what's there now but I'm not sure I like them? Suppose you can't form that much of an opinion from 1 picture. Where will the people living here park? I don't see any mention of that?
Apparently there will be parking (presumably underground) for 400 cars. But fitting 4 towers that size into this plot must entitle the developers to a golden shoe-horn award..
Another very average apartment development. I thought the plan this time around was to lift the standard of design...? Obviously not.
As soon as the article mentioned Dandara, I immediately lowered my expectations to uniform and plain box shapes. Was not disappointed.

Because something as low density as that so near the city centre would be prohibitively expensive. That sort of development is more suited to the suburbs, where land values are cheaper.
What i find quite sad is the way we block in the river with large tower blocks.. rather than opening up the space.. The plans I once heard about the demolition of the Renaissance Hotel included opening up the river for public use.. but after that the river that passes through the city is blocked in and under utilised.. other cities make use of this... but clearly not here in Manchester [or Salford!]
Agreed.. lots of potential for greenery and walkways along the river. Considering the number of apartments planned for the area it would certainly be popular.

Maybe the development, and increase in population, will result in SALFORD COUNCIL cleaning the streets of LITTER a LOT more??? The way into the Lowry Hotel is a disgrace.We went recently to a wedding, with vistors from Canada, who commented what a great hotel Lowry was but asked about all the filth in the streets as you approach...Is this the norm? Sadly yes here it seems to be...
