A Whole Golf Competition in One!

Published on November 2nd 2005.

You might remember that ManchesterConfidential.com took part in a very wet and windy corporate golf day a couple of months ago and we promised that we'd do something that you could get involved with so, true to our word and never ones to do things by the book, here's a golfing idea unique to Manchester, you'll stay dry and warm in the winter, and you'll get the chance to beat us.

Sick of hitting a perfect looking drive, only for a gust of winter wind or December rain to force the ball to flop out of the air and dive depressingly into the bushes, lakes, trees and bunkers, winter golf has never been an appealing activity.

But then, sitting at home twiddling thumbs waiting for the sun to come out again isn’t appealing either, so what’s a fair weather golfer to do?

A solution is at hand with the upcoming corporate league which is a brand new idea being piloted in Manchester. The fact it's all new and modern means it takes away all the hundreds of years of golfing tradition laid down by the PGA, but while it removes some of the good things like walking around in the fresh air, it retains most of the good elements like the social side of the game, the competitive nature, and the most pleasurable aspect of battering a golf ball as hard as you can. It also adds aspects to the game, things like warmth (it’s all indoors in heated booths) and relaxation (You don’t have to walk very far).

One of the most pleasing aspects for teams who might want to enter is the chance to whip the pants of the ManchesterConfidential.com team who will be taking part in the unique target golf event.

Teeing off this month, the Corporate Golf League is going to take place at the state of the art driving range at Playgolf, near the Trafford Centre.

Teams of four people are invited to take part in the snooker style target event. Teams will have to attempt to hit coloured greens in a similar order to potting the balls in snooker. There’s prizes galore, and not just the main overall one of a five star holiday, there’ll be prizes every night for weekly winners, closest to the pin spot prizes, etc. So, for the same reason that matchplay is better than stroke play, if you’re not the best golfer and you hit a few duff shots, all is not lost and you can just get on with your next shot.

It’s not all about the golf either. Think about it, you’re paying for five nights to register a score to get you a final position in the league, which means that once you’ve selected a team captain, you can bring along 3 different clients every time you play. Alternatively, you can bring three workmates, or just mates, and fraternise with the PGA tutors that will be on hand, or the girls who’ll be delivering drinks all night to your heated booths.

The league is spread over five months, but you only have to play five times between November and April. This allows you complete flexibility in terms of when you play. You’ll also be able to check your progress on the Big Network website.

Ben Hogan may well turn in his grave, Jack Nicklaus might be seething, it’s not golf as we know it, but we’re all for the rule changes and the attempt at bringing the age old game into the 21st century, as well as allowing people to actually enjoy the game in the middle of winter instead of getting soaked to the skin and breaking your clubs on the floor in frustration. Manchester is once again balanced on its front foot, preparing to drive the new idea down the M6 to the rest of the country, so give it a try and you might just enjoy it.

If you are interested in taking part and entertaining your clients, then please click here to register your interest. Entering a team costs £400 – the first 30 teams who register will get a 40% discount. PLUS, one team who registers their interest will get their entry fee refunded.
