A Brit of alright

Lynda Moyo breaks down last nights Brit awards

Written by . Published on February 21st 2008.

A Brit of alright

The Brit Awards took place at Earls Court in London last night with hosts the Osbournes doing what they do best: slurring and swearing. But who better than this rock’n’roll family to present the annual show, which has in previous years seen Jarvis Cocker’s bare backside, and John Prescot drenched with ice water, to name but a few episodes of bad Brit behaviour. Well you can probably think of a list of worthier presenters but nevertheless a delirious Sharon, excitable Ozzy and their two somewhat muted children dished out the gongs.

Vic Reeves presented the award for Best British Album and should have been awarded the Presenter of the Night award himself. We all know that awards shows are synonymous for badly scripted cringeworthy witter, but hilariously Reeves was probably ad-libbing.

Metrosexual man-thing Mika kicked off the ceremony with more camp than a Millets’ January sale on a set which flashed like a winning fruit-machine. And the jackpot fruit? A giant red apple by the name of Beth Ditto.

Take That picked up the first award of the night for Best Live Act followed by another surprising collaboration of the Klaxons ‘Golden Skans’ and Rihanna singing her hit single ‘Umbrella.’ This was a reflection of a year of popular music in the UK which saw ‘Umbrella’ being hummed by everyone and their granny along with the nu-rave revolution. (I personally am still trying to decifer what’s new, sorry nu, about it). Whether or not Rihanna actually nu who the Klaxons were, is besides the point. It was a beautiful moment.

The ever modest self proclaimed ‘Louis Vuitton Don’, Kanye West, scooped the award for Best International Male. Kanye- do us all a favour: shut up (but keep making good music). And for the Best British Solo the award went to Mark Ronson- the only ever artist to have won this category without actually singing any songs himself. No wonder his list of thank-you’s was so long. He accepted the award humbly from Beth Ditto. No guesses for who his next collabo conquest will be.

Ronson performed a ‘Mark Medley’ with Adele, Daniel Merriweather and Amy Winehouse who provided the singing support which has him laughing all the way to the bank. The crowd and viewers had been eagerly awaiting Ms Winehouse, who as always didn’t cease to surprise with her vocal ability. Slighty flaky in parts it was a wonder how this delirious looking mini-Lily Savage managed it. But thankfully she did. She later gave a solo performance of ‘Love is a losing game’ which she dedicated to her hubby Blake. Awww.

Vic Reeves presented the award for Best British Album and should have been awarded the Presenter of the Night award himself. We all know that awards shows are synonymous for badly scripted cringeworthy witter, but hilariously Reeves was probably ad-libbing. Like in his ‘Shooting Stars’ days with the joke where no one laughed and the tumble-weed rolled, Sharon Osbourne called him a pisshead and told him to get off the stage. Now that’s what the Brit Awards is all about.

The Foo Fighters took prizes for International Group and International Album of the Year honouring Lisa Loeb, MC Hammer, Shakespeare's Sister, Huey Lewis, Bros and Kula Shaker: all previous year’s Brit winners. Dave Grohl then said: “Wish we could be there, but we just sold out Madison Square Gardens.” It’s good to know the Brits still have such a well-respected presence on an international scale.

Performances followed from Leona Lewis who was dressed like she was just getting ready for a high school prom hence she hadn’t put her shoes on yet. She warbled her way through ‘Bleeding Love’ seamlessly but didn’t manage to bag any awards. Average performances came from the Kaiser Chiefs who sang the most overplayed song in recent musical history ‘Ruby’ and Kylie Minogue whose performance was more show-off than show girl as she proceeded to pick up Best International Female. Well it had to be her or Rihanna as they were the only ones who turned up.

The big winners of the night had to be the Arctic Monkeys who took to the stage to receive the British Album and British Group awards which triggered a Formula One winner’s response: showering everyone with champers. This along with Take That and the Foo Fighters also picking up two awards each made the Brits a testosterone triumph.

Paul McCartney then rounded off the show with a well received performance which he dedicated to his first wife, Linda, but strangely forgot to mention Heather ‘Can-I-have-your-money-Paul?’ Mucca. Everybody now with Hey Jude, “Nah, Nah, Nah, Nah-Nah-Nah, Nah”. Touching, but Paul even if you didn’t mention Heather you could at least have mentioned Liverpool’s Capital of Culture. Like Ringo has done so movingly.

Winners:

British Male Solo: Mark Ronson
British Album: Favourite Worst Nightmare - Arctic Monkeys
British Female Solo: Kate Nash
British Group: Arctic Monkeys
Best Live Act: Take That
British Breakthrough: Mika
British Single: “Shine” by Take That
International Male Solo: Kanye West
International Female Solo: Kylie Minogue
International Group: Foo Fighters
International Album: Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace - Foo Fighters
Outstanding Contribution: Paul McCartney
Critics Choice 2008: Adele

Actually I've changed my mind, I am glad that there were now brits for Shayne Ward or Robbie Williams they are awful, did you not hear the terrible 'If thats ok with you' that had a cartoon squirrel voice in it, I couldnt believe it was a real song. Robbie Williams is not talented, just a massive show off.

Felt sorry for Vic Reeves - apparently it emerged later that the autocue had broken, so he was trying his best - and got pretty irritated by Sharon Osbourne interrupting and saying he was pissed...

JinkiesFebruary 21st 2008.

Sheesh, what is it with Kylie's gay following!? Her last album was bland to such a point that half the people I know didn't even notice it come out, certainly not deserving of an award. I second Descartes, it's just not cool to like getting awards this days, you've got to not care, the kids hate the establishment and so must you ;)

Katy you muppet - what has Kylie done lately? She's brought out a fantastic album that hasn't been off my car'd cd player since it came out. Leave her alone. She's been around for over 20 years and is as good as ever. And what's more, she's a decent person, who doesn't go round slagging people off like most stars these days!

Loving Sharon OsbourneFebruary 21st 2008.

piss off you bastard! She is great! Also loved the comment by Alan Carr, is that his name? He was pissed up and said he got his alcohol by "sticking a straw in Amy Winehouse's beehive." CLASS!

What a farce it was from nominations onwards! Shayne Ward the most talented british male since Robbie Williams wasn't even nominated! Just goes to show that the people that buy the records don't have a say in the nominations! Embarassing to be nominated for a whole host of awards and go home empty handed! The public clearly have better taste than the people decide who will be nominated!

GemmaFebruary 21st 2008.

Katy - what has Kylie done recently? Well bar releasing her new album which has done extremely well, she beat cancer and then carried on with the tour that she had to cut short due to being diagnosed with the killer disease. Thats what she's done you idiot.

JoolsFebruary 21st 2008.

Yeah was a pretty poor show really and with The Osbournes presenting, not much hope hey! Not a big Kylie fan and never have been so didn't agree with that ( but will stay clear of the ulteria motives as thats got nothing to do with music)or Whinehouse, Leone Lewis etc etc but then everyone has their own opinions and music tastes. Was only glad to see Arctic Monkeys up there ( although so much talent about right now was surprised to see them win again) and also Foo Fighters, but thats just coz I like em! Let's hope the NME awards is a bit more interesting!!

jomovFebruary 21st 2008.

Mmmm I don't think you can call people Kylie haters (hate is a very strong word) at all, although I do think that Kylie is given far too much credit, put next to her sister (for example) Dannii who I believe has worked alot harder for what she has achieved but doesn't get a quarter of the recognition Kylie gets.

Brits are getting more farcical each year and what a load of pants it was ! Nominees were a joke with so many worthy artists being left out notably Shayne Ward and Amy McDonald. Performances were boring to be honest and Amy Winehouse and Sharon O were very unsteady on their feet ! This is now a money making excercise for the record companies and has lost any credibility as far as I am concerned. Mark Ronson, talented he may be but if he can win the best male award there is something far wrong, he cant sing for a start, Shayne Ward should have walked away with this award but for some reason was not even up for nomination in a category which has such a poor selection of male singers it was embarassing. Its time the public got to decide who they want and not a bunch of overpaid record company executive who are so far up their own back sides its not true. Rant over.

SteFebruary 21st 2008.

Brits was awful, full of overpaid pissheads and arrogant bastards.

AnonymousFebruary 21st 2008.

who cares anymore..they are all happy as they are all earning cash out of it....

KatyFebruary 21st 2008.

Sorry didnt see ur comment Gemma - since when do you win a brit for fighting cancer, how many people fight cancer each year, dont see them winning brits????? Its a music award not a bravery award duh!!!!

LoisFebruary 21st 2008.

.....crap, not carp!

Embarrassed to be BritishFebruary 21st 2008.

Last night was embarrassing! With a list of no body turning up(bar the Monkeys) and no real credible acts it was possibly the worst Brits I can remember. Mika? What the f is that about, how that can be the best new comer of the last year, do me a favor! The Foo's the best international group???? It was so obvious it hurt that they couldn't give a damn about the award anyway and besides how can you over look so many other better international acts that far more deserve it. And is it just me that would love for someone to give Sharon Osbourne a slap across the face so hard it would undo all those facelifts she's had!!!!! Last night was so camp and crap I watched it on fast forward after recording it due to the match and even then I had to watch it from behind tightly closed eyes……

AdamFebruary 21st 2008.

No Beckie, I don't actually know Kylie personally. But from the way she conducts herself (classy) and how fellow celebs who DO know her have nothing but good things to say about her I'm prepared to give her the benefit of the doubt. I have met her and had a lovely peck on the cheek, which hasn't clouded my judgement at all! Anyway I agree that she needs to sack the stylist. All this robotic nonsense has been going on too long. She needs to get back to being sexy Kylie and doing what she does bext - making great pop records. They may not be to your tastes Kylie haters but obviously you've got nowt better to do with your sad lives than slagging people. KYLIE ROCKS!!

are you serious?February 21st 2008.

Shayne Ward???????? WTF??? errr....how many songs has he had out over that last year? 1 or 2? passed by without most people noticing though didn't they? better british males than him around methinks......

KatyFebruary 21st 2008.

Sorry Adam didnt know you knew Kylie personally 'she's a decent person, who doesn't go round slagging people off like most stars these days!” So are lots of people they dont win Brits for it tho! Been around for 20years singing crap pop - well done Kylie!!!

MatthewFebruary 21st 2008.

And the Brit award for Best Recovery from Cancer and Services to Tinny Pop goes to...

KatyFebruary 21st 2008.

Whats Kylie done recently to pick up Best International Female??? Disgrace!!!!

LoisFebruary 21st 2008.

I thought the Brits was awful, cant bear Mika or Kylie, fair enough she might be a nice person (how would any of us really know this) but her musics carp & the tour is all about what outfits she's got on

whateverFebruary 21st 2008.

Well you guys are completely right, it was diabolical and I'm seeing alot of arrogant arsehole celebs not getting what they deserve. However, the money made goes to the Brit Academy though, which happens to fund lot of ready to bloom young artists that deserve the money that the institution earns so... im happy for that **** to shine on my TV... I just don't have to watch it. Neither do you. Okay??

AnonymousFebruary 21st 2008.

Anonymous before you start calling Katy a freak take a look in the mirror. Kyle might have done loads this year but one thing she hasnt done is release any good music!!!!! I couldn't care less if she is a nice person blah blah blah give the award to someone who has actually released a decent song!!! The only reason she got the award was through pity

AdamFebruary 21st 2008.

DescartesFebruary 21st 2008.

Everything goes in cycles, I reckon we're on our way back yesteryear with crazy rock and roll stars smashing up rooms and going mental all over the place - sadly first we've got to put up with their misanthropic nonchalance and the fact that they just don't give a ****. They want money, not awards, and everyone knows the Brits are voted for by kids, how credible is an artist if they've won due to 13 year olds?

JinkiesFebruary 21st 2008.

Doesn't sound like Kylie is all that nice, anyone else spot the story in today's Metro? Turns out she won, then invited a load of people to celebrate with her but then went to a private room and let the main party get massively overcrowded leaving loads of people were stuck outside in the cold.

BeckieFebruary 21st 2008.

How does everyone know that Kylie is a nice person? Are you all friends? If so, please give the gal some fashion advice..

JanieFebruary 21st 2008.

Last night was worth watching just to see Take That and Adele get the recognition they both deserve. Beth Ditto was brilliant as always and Mika did his best to try and stand up to her mammoth vocals but she shone through as the star on the stage at that point. Anyone know what Sharon Osbourne had been on before she clobbered Vic Reeves or what was making Amy Winehouse want to pull the hem of her dress up around her throat?

AnonymousFebruary 21st 2008.

changing the subject did anyone else get the impression that Mrs. O Isn't a big fan of Vic Reeves?

mervert the ..February 21st 2008.

So did they not do an award for 'best-recovered-from-cancer-some-good-dance-numbers but-otherwise-trachy-pop-but-hey-what-a-killer-tight-female-ass ' then?

JinkiesFebruary 21st 2008.

And before Gemma jumps on top of my comment, best international artist should be about the music, it's wonderful that she's made the all clear but that shouldn't be part of a musical award should it.

AnonymousFebruary 21st 2008.

Here Here Gemma - Katy go & get a life you freak! I am biased as I work on the Brits & do know the person in question & she has probably done more this past year than Katy will ever achieve in her entire lifetime!Ahhh, that's better!

caz65February 21st 2008.

Oh and agree that Kylie is very over rated and cant really sing that well. Her latest offering of garbage is worse than usual. NIce she may be but talented not really.

AnonymousFebruary 21st 2008.
