1847 The Vegetarian Bistro launches

Detoxretox has undergone a rebrand and is now open as 1847 The Vegetarian Bistro.

Owner Damien Davenport felt the original name suited the eatery when it opened in April 2010 as a daytime café which offered a salad bar (the ‘detox’) and pie and mash (the ‘retox’).

A year later and the café has grown up. It’s now a vegetarian bistro and needed a name that better suited the new image. 1847 was the year The Vegetarian Society was founded in Manchester and it remains local with its base in Altrincham, so it’s only fitting that the city centre’s only vegetarian restaurant be given this name.

Along with the rebrand, the menu has been refreshed for spring. The popular Halloumi 'fish' n chips and Cheese soufflé dishes have been kept but both now have lighter accompaniments to make them more seasonal. The Halloumi is now served with sweet potato chips and fresh garden peas, whilst the soufflé comes with bubble and squeak potato cakes and a selection of spring vegetables.

Damien said, “It’s the time of year when people think about their figures for summer.” He thinks the new addition of a Red rice salad with smoked tofu will go down well with the clientèle.

For the first time, side orders and appetisers have been added to the menu. The desserts menu has also seen some seasonal changes.

The popular Sunday lunch menu remains the same. It offers three options of starters, mains and desserts – two of which are vegan for each course. Costing £17.95 for all three courses, the menu features the Pie of the week and the ever-popular Sticky toffee pudding with thyme custard.

Well done to them for having the balls to change the name after listening to public opinion. I am sure it will now become attractive to the curious carnivore market. Congratulations too on passing the first year mark.

Ate there a couple of weeks back and cannot recommend it highly enough. Food is a cut above your standard vegetarian fare, prepared with obvious care and finesse. Following on from Brian C's point, I dined there as the sole veggie in a party of carnivores, all of whom loved it and vowed to return.

I like the new name. However, perhaps I caught DetoxRetox on a bad night but I found the food to be bland and very disappointing. Such a shame, as I was really looking forward to trying it after the (normally very reliable) ManCon review.

Ate at 1847 last night. Must be my 4th time now. I absolutely love it there and want to try everything. Have tried the soup, flatbread and filo parcels (starters) hallomi, bangers and mash and souffle (mains) and gin & tonic cake, donuts, sticky toffee pudding, pears, affagato, etc... It's all delicious. My boyfriend and I share everything so we can try all that they offer. Everyone should try it esp as the Man Con deal is still on. I am contemplating a Sunday lunch excersion very soon. Hopefully they won't be fully booked when I try.

Ate here this evening with two meat-eaters and we all really enjoyed it. The beer battered halloumi was delicious, as was the cheese souffle!!! Fab offer on at the moment, we had 2 starters, 3 mains, 3 desserts, a gin & tonic, bottle of Peroni, soft drink and 3 lattes and the bill came to less than £65!!!!!!! I have discovered 1847 at just the right time as Greens Vegetarian Restaurant in Disbury has become a huge disappointment with poorly cooked food and extremely snooty staff! Last time I visited Greens the filo pastry arrived undercooked and when I told the waiter he asked me what I wanted him to do about it!!!! I was given a replacement but the pastry was so hard I couldn't break into it with my knife ... and they charged me for that inedible mess, with NO apologies! So thank goodness for 1847, I highly recommend it, if you were about to book Greens DON'T, you get much nicer food, friendlier staff and value for money in 1847.
