Four North West Restaurants in Good Food Guide Top 50

HESTON Blumenthal's Fat Duck is still the UK's best restaurant, according to the Good Food Guide 2012.

The three-Michelin-starred restaurant in Bray - reviewed by Gordo here - retained its perfect score of 10 out of 10, while several other establishments have scored an almost perfect nine out of 10.

In our region, Ramsons in Bury, Fraiche in the Wirral, L'Enclume in Cumbria and the Chester Grovsenor made the top 50.

While it's always difficult to compile a "best of" list, this is oddly inconsistent to me. The Ledbury is ahead of the Square IMO, and both better (although not as "look at me") than L'Enclume. Le Manoir should lose a star as far as I am concerned. It's a good one star, but nothing more. Sat Bains better than the 3 star Waterside? Hmmm.

What's interesting though is the sheer diversity of restaurants in the list. Many people think that top dining is all about tiddly portions served with cocky assurance. Far from the case - one visit to Michelin starred Tyddyn Llan will end up with bloated stomachs all round, such is the generous sizing of the portions.
