Simon Shaw: Guestrant Gets El Gato Negro Chef

For one night only Modern Catalan Fine Dining in Chorlton

Simon Shaw: Guestrant Gets El Gato Negro Chef

SINCE being awarded a glowing review by the Observer’s Jay Rayner in 2007, El Gato Negro has been the North’s finest Spanish restaurant. Serving imaginative, contemporary tapas and larger plates inspired by regular visits to Barcelona, the cooking is unlike anything presently in Manchester.

Selections from the current menu include baby roast chicken with lemon, garlic and paprika and 12 hour-cooked belly pork with cheek and Spanish black pudding.

Owner and head chef Simon Shaw has a real passion for Spanish cuisine and he’s latest chef to step up for Electrik’s ‘Guestrant’ series in Chorlton.

The one-night only restaurant has hosted award-winning chefs from Aumbry, Ramsons, the Mark Addy and elsewhere. For this special, multi-course meal, Simon will be serving the imported and local produce. Expect flavours drawn from warmer climes, as well as finely cured meats and impeccable seafood.

As typical in Spain, the first half of the meal will be a selection of sharing plates, served in no particular order. Selections from the current menu include baby roast chicken with lemon, garlic and paprika and 12 hour-cooked belly pork with cheek and Spanish black pudding. Seafood stylings include squid rice with avocado puree and baby monkfish tails with shellfish paella.

Typical of tapas dining, meats and cheese are a strong suit with acorn-fed Jamon Iberico sourced from Barcelona, and nutty, light Manchego with green figs on the side. Desserts bring things back home with local ice creams and a range of pastries and traditional puddings.

SIMON SHAW will be at Guestrant with his modern Catalan fine dining menu on Monday 23 January from 7.30pm. £25 per person, book at INFO@ELECTRIKBAR.CO.UK Electrik is 559 Willbraham Road, Chorlton M21 0AE.  0161 881 3315

Simon really knows how to pack in his flavours, was at his restaurant in Ripponden on Friday last (second visit) and it did not dissapoint. Not usually too fussed by cheese on a menu, but his selection is amazing, as is his Spanish Black Pudding. I found the pigs cheek a little bland, though maybe it was the Black Puddings strength that overpowered it.

Worth a visit if you like Spanish Tapas, a stong veggie menu too.
