Is This The Most Consistent Dish In Manchester?

What? Steak and Kidney pudding at £12.99

Ingredients: Braised steak and lamb’s kidneys with chop house chunky chips, mushy peas and a jug of gravy.

Why? "Because this dish is so consistent. It's a perfect pie (or pudding, Ruth is a southerner).

"I hate anything that reminds me of the gristle-ridden pies I was forced to eat at boarding school, or the fast cooked off-cuts that my nan used to fill her pies with.

"I like my meat good, tender, oozing quality and flavour or not at all, thanks – and the Chophouse's puddings have never let me down. Packed into a doughy suet pudding bowl, the combination of gravy, with slow-cooked steak and seared kidneys is something else: a believeable dish, the kind of thing you can put your faith in, that won't let you down.

"I've eaten it more than 30 times (that's a habit that's cost me nearly £400) and it's never veered from stoic perfection. When your life is falling apart. When your tired or hungover. When you want to celebrate. There is never an occasion that the Chophouse steak and kidney pudding doesn't suit – and that's because it's the archetype of this dish – the role model for others to follow.

Piccolinos seafood risotto, gorgeous every time. Closely followed by the smoked haddock chowder at Kim by the Sea. Compliments to George Bergiers on his pudding modelling. Brill

Ruth's deffo set the bar high with Sam's stunning pud - it truly is habit forming if a little on the large side for me, I've never managed to eat it all. If I'm wanting something spicy then it's off to Akbar's for their stunning lamb cutlets. Have eaten them so many times and can't wait for the next sitting. Follow this with Chicken Tikka Makhani and I'm a happy girl.

Most DEFINITELY Pla Chu Chee at Phet Pailin, 46 George Street, Chinatown. Phet Pailin serves the most amazing authentic Thai food this side of Thailand. This understated little hidden gem never fails to deliver on taste. Run by Thai people of Buddhist faith, they don't serve alcohol but.... you can bring your own! I hardly ever have to look at the menu when I go there because it's usually alway Tom Yam Kung to start and then the very gorgeous Pla Chu Chee (crispy fried taliapia in a red chilli and coconut sauce) with coconut rice for my main. It's a taste sensation and never fails to cause an orgasmic reaction to my taste buds. Everyone I recommend it to keeps going back for more. Highly highly recommended. Ooooh my mouths watering just thinking about it....

I have to agree. The steak and kidney pudding is wonderful and always consistent. I get very happy when I know I am going to Sams or Mr Thomas;s and even though I think I will try something different - I DON't - purely because they are so comforting and tasty. Great dish. I have eaten quite a few over the years but keep going back for more. Very satisfying. Everyone should try them especially in these depressing times as they are great value.

East z East (Riverside) hits the spot every time. The team work in military operation and the food is simply delicious. I can't make a final decision on my all time fave at East z East but I'd say my top 2 are: Chicken Shashlik - tender pieces of succulent quality chicken sizzle magnificently on the hot plate, teamed with a spicy sauce full of veggies (girly I know). And the Jhinga Prawn Tandoori - a clay over delight! The prawns are massive in this dish and not at all expensive for the quality and portion size. And the naan breads, they are like clouds! Massive, fluffy clouds. That's it, I'm off for an East z East!

Filetitos at El Rincon, Laksa at Tampopo Albert Square, mystery Curry at Yadgar, pretty much everything on the menu at Croma, Stock's Carpaccio. All brilliant and all exactly the same each time.

Sorry, I meant big mac meal. The chips are pretty consistent too. If you've not been to McDonalds it's fantastic. It's on Regent Road in Salford. It's a little out of the way if you live/work in the city, but well worth the trip. They have free parking too. My friends and I discovered it about 2 months ago, I said it would never take off, I mean, 'happy meals' (not as good as the big mac meal) - who would have thought it. The chef there has proven me wrong though. He is there putting the shifts in that boy, working day and night. I nearly deleted this post as I half want to keep this little gem to myself, but the philanthropist in me, just wants to shout it from the roof tops... I'M LOVING IT!

Before I saw what Confidential was saying I'd already decided it was the S&K pudding - but at Mr Thomas's which is my favourite (I once sat by a window in a draft at Sams and it's never quite been the same since!). We recently took friends for S&K puddings promising it would be the best they'd ever tasted. They were convinced!
