Grillstock Festival Heads To Manchester

WE all like a sausage. Can you ever remember meeting anyone that didn’t like a sausage? Even veggies can chow down on those weird Quorny fungus things. The greatest of the ancient Greek poets, Homer, even mentioned the humble sausage in Odyssey, meaning it’s been with us for well over two millennia.

There’s hot wing, rib and chilli eating competitions for those of a more glutinous persuasion, while the Brooklyn Brewery will be manning the pumps to dish out some fine craft beers to wash down all that bloody meat.

In this topsy-turvy modern age of trepidation, distrust and overriding sense of uncertainty the sausage remains; a perennial reminder of all things simple, homely and delicious in life.

So celebrate our pal the sausage (and everything else meaty) during a rip-roaring BBQ-fest down at Albert Square this summer. Between 8–9 June the Square will become engulfed beneath Grillstock’s hanging cloud of charcoal smoke and the tempting aroma of sizzling animal parts.

Teams from across the land will cross tongs, prongs and spatulas in the King of the ‘Q’ Competition, whilst some of the finest BBQsters around will be sharing their expertise and recipes in the BBQ Academy.

To top it all off there’s a musical line-up of live rockabilly, cajun, bluegrass, country and other box-stomping sounds from the American South – It’s the closest you can get to Alabama other then, ya’ know, actually going to Alabama. But you wouldn't want to do that anyway, have you seen Deliverence?

There's not a gherkin or gem lettuce leaf in sight, just meat, beer and music, what’s not to like. Just don’t tell the Heart Foundation, they’d have a…

I'd go to this if it wasn't at the same time as Parklife. What a shame.

So Homer was writing in 1013AD? Don't use literary allusions you know nowt about.

I just thought I'd take the opportunity to mention This & That cafe, because nobody has yet.

Grillstock - big let down? I didn't go to Grillstock but have heard from those who did, that it was a huge disappointment. The prior impression was given that there would be about 30-odd independent grill-smiths doing their own thing and selling their food on the day, this was not the case (apparently) with very little variety in the food on offer. The live music was on a loop. Any comments from readers who DID go?
