North West bucks downward trend for organics

Despite new research by Mintel and the Soil Association showing a decline in UK sales of organic food, organic vegbox company Riverford Organic has seen its sales increase by over 155 per cent in the North West.

Delivering locally grown organic vegetables, fruit, eggs and meat to homes across the region, Riverford on Stockley Farm has a number of franchisees who promote and manage specific areas in the North West.

The company, which was set up with the aim of making organic food more accessible and affordable, was named the UK’s best ethical business in the Observer Ethical Awards 2009 and 2010 and Best Online Retailer 2010. Riverford works in partnership with John Walton from Stockley Farm and several other local organic farmers including Organic Dan based near Ormskirk and local egg supplier Tim Harrison from Abbey Leys Farm.

John has been selling organic vegetables out of Stockley Farm since 2002 and joined forces with Riverford Organic in September 2008 to ensure that Riverford customers in the North West could enjoy as much local, quality produce in their boxes as possible.

David Tomlinson, Riverford Organic’s sales development manager said: “Riverford Organic was established in the South West of England in 1987 and has always enjoyed strong sales in the South of the country. The North West is a relatively new area for the company and we have been amazed at the response over the last three years. I believe that awareness of organic products and their benefits has intensified over the last couple of years, thanks to TV and press coverage and shoppers in the North West have decided to give organic a go.”

“What we offer is a more affordable alternative to the major supermarkets. Our organic fruit and veg is often cheaper, and therefore offers a more attractive proposition to consumers in times of recession.”
