Mystery Sampling Session: Wine And Choc

HANDS up who likes wine? Hands up who likes chocolate? Hands up who likes wine paired with chocolate? If you've found your hand in the air for all three, keep reading.

Barber modestly knew when to shut up and let his audience take over, a rare trait to find in the wine buffs.

Having been to various wine tastings in and around the city, Room, Croma, and The Led Station to name a few, I have to admit that I am guilty sometimes of drifting off and wondering when my next top up is going to come.

Wine know-it-alls are very proud that they know it all; most actually don’t and they can sometimes go on with themselves.

As interesting as the background info on the booze, what many of us want is:

1. To get a bit sloshed (or a lot - dependent on quality of wine)

2. Meet other people who also like to get a bit sloshed.

4. Have a nibble

5. Education

6. Discussion/opinion share.

Having worked thirteen-odd years in high end restaurants, Barber knows his stuff, hence the birth of the successful Didsbury Wine Club two years ago.

Members of the club enjoy social, informal events involving the slurping of wine, canapé munching and a cheeky discount at Reserve, the great little wine shop on Burton Road in West Didsbury.

But why is this pleasure kept confined to Didsbury? I hear you whine. Exactly. Barber, to the rescue, decided to team up with The Liqourists who are known for their spirits and cocktail trails around the city. Perfect combo.

The first of many events kicked off last week at The Liqourists HQ, a cool space behind a non-descript green shutter door at 22 Redbank.

Wine and chocolate was the coupling of the evening. Choccies to die for supplied by Bon Bon Boutique and homemade treats by Barber himself, who showcases as a bit of an expert when it comes to making the stuff - husband material if you ask me. Wine supplied by Hammond's of Knutsford, a selection of good taste I may add.

It’s informal, relaxed and a perfect environment for friendship blossoming.

Even Gordo finally met some people who liked him.

Barber modestly knew when to shut up and let his audience take over, a rare trait to find in the wine buffs.  A lot less ‘preachy’ and much more a communal event, a must for anyone who possesses a half-decent palate  and likes to chatter to new people. Chili made with high-end dark chocolate also made an appearance, I mean, what's NOT to love?
