An Ode to Shlurp

An Ode to Shlurp

How do I love thee, Shlurp? Let me count the ways…

I love thee to the depth of thy soup, the breadth of thy bagels and the height of thy freshly stocked refrigerator.

I love thee to the pit of my grumbling stomach on the breakfast run, and to the tip of my tastebuds at lunchtime…

Ok, so I may never make a poet, but my tummy knows a good thing when it meets one - and Shlurp is definitely a good thing. A very good thing in fact.

If you like your food fresh, chemical free and exceptionally tasty, then look no further than this gem of an eaterie, tucked away off Brazennose Street, happily within strolling distance of the Manchester Confidential.com office.

A firm favourite amongst the Mancon team, Shlurp was our official supplier of porridge in the mornings prior to last week’s ingenious purchase of an office microwave. We still love you though Shlurp, and will continue to slurp your soup and munch on your sandwiches for time to come.

Shlurp calls itself a soup bar (please note that this is not the same as a soup kitchen – there are considerably less homeless people and you must pay for your food). And boy do they do good soup. From chunky casserole style to low fat ‘skinny’ soup, Shlurp’s selection of lunch in a cup is inspiring, bringing together flavours from all around the world and fresh local ingredients. The soups change all the time, with specials brought in for different occasions.

If you prefer your food solid, Shlurp do a fantastic range of wraps, sandwiches and salads, all freshly made on the premises with seasonal and locally sourced ingredients delivered that morning. From peppered mackerel to shredded duck, and from lemon prawns to minted lamb shish kebabs, the hungry folk of Manchester can choose from five different types of bread and (I think) about 12 million different fillings, all dizzyingly scrawled in chalk on blackboards around the top of the room.

And to wash it all down with the folk at Shlurp are now experimenting with a range of freshly prepared smoothies, again with flavours changing from week to week. Consistent with Shlurp’s goody two shoes attitude to food, the smoothies, which include a breakfast smoothie, a skinny smoothie and a ‘V8’ – eight different types of fruit and vegetables blended into a potion of juicy goodness – are prepared daily using the freshest ingredients, and no nasty additives or preservatives.

As I write this I am er, slurping away at a carnival of zesty fruit in a cup, this week’s ‘skinny’ smoothie being melon, lime and kiwi. Mmm. Well, that’s my allocation of vitamins for the day, now where’s that chocolate…

In case I haven’t made myself clear enough, let me just confirm – Shlurp is great. If you work nearby, lucky you. If you don’t, then it’s worth the trek and you’ll feel doubly healthy for burning off a few calories on the walk there and back.
