Can you bake...on the BBC?

The BBC needs more northern amateur and home bakers to rise to the challenge

Published on April 9th 2010.

Can you bake...on the BBC?

Apparently the BBC wants a few more northern amateur bakers to step forward, to complement the numbers of southern folk who've already done so.

At the moment Auntie is trying to gather together the best of the nation's amateur bakers for a show called 'The Great British Bake Off'.

Whilst clearly we don't have enough cookery programmes (yeah, right), this one at least seems to be pursuing an interesting line of enquiry with a core cookery skill.

At Confidential we just hope they ban cup cakes as a category. They're everywhere. We dream of cupcakes.

Anyway see what you think, here's the BBC invitation.

'Do you enjoy baking pies, loaves or cakes?

'Is baking your hobby? Do you enjoy making special food? Can you turn out a great pie, a lovely cake or a tasty loaf?

'Would you like to spend some time baking with some of Britain’s best bakers?

'BBC2 are making a new series about amateur bakers which will be judged by some of Britain’s baking heroes. ‘The Great British Bake Off’ is looking for amateur bakers who are talented but can show the rest of Britain what great food can come from their region.

'We hope it will be a lot of fun and in the end one baker will be crowned the UK’s best amateur baker.

'However long you’ve been baking for, we’d love to hear from you. If you’re interested in applying to take part in the series and would like to find out more, please email here or call 0207 067 4860.

'To apply you must be over 16 on 1st May 2010. As an ‘amateur baker’ your main source of income cannot come from commercial baking and / or cooking in a professional environment and you cannot have ever worked full time as a baker. You cannot have any formal NVQ or other professional catering qualifications acquired in the last 10 years. Other T&Cs apply.

'The deadline for entry is Friday 16 April.'
