THE RESULTS ARE IN - READ HERE
CONFIDENTIAL has been carefully piecing together 'BEST OF MCR' lists for a couple of years now.
This is probably the most important 'Best Of MCR' we'll ever collate. Perhaps one of the most important articles we'll ever publish.
Most recently, we've compiled Manchester's best: Indie Coffee and Tea Shops, Chinatown Restaurants, Breakfasts, Cheap Eats, Dirty Food, Buildings That Never Happened, Vintage Stores, Cycle Cafes, Drinking Terraces, the list goes on...
It's scrupulous work, but helps our readers make informed choices on where to spend their time and dough.
Now we're asking for a bit back.
Next up on our radar is the most noble of all British dishes; the Sunday Roast.
Perhaps calling the Sunday Roast a mere dish is doing it a disservice, it is, of course, more than that. Alongside tea, tolerance, doggedness and the legacy of empire (for all its ills), the Sunday Roast is part of the Great British disposition. It's woven into our very red, white and blue fabric.
Why else would the Fro... the French... call us 'Les Rosbifs' (the Roast Beefs)?
Thus, we're not entering into this one lightly. This is probably the most important 'Best Of MCR' we'll ever collate. Perhaps one of the most important articles we'll ever publish, such is the collective passion for a Sunday Roast.
And we're bound to receive a fair bit of stick for our picks and admissions, that's why we're tagging you in.
We've got plenty of our opinions, but we'd like you to use the 'Rant' function below, or our twitter, or our facebook, to give us you're 'Best Sunday Roast In Greater Manchester'... if you'd be so kind.
Then we'll go fill our chops and report back with a list of the best. Sound good? Ace. Let's get to it...

Piccolino Manchester does a pretty great sharing roast for two people. £25 for two to share Manzo | Roast Hereford & Limousin beef, 28 day aged, garlic & thyme PORCHETTA | Roast ‘Italian style’ pork Pollo | Roast whole Shropshire reared chicken, lemon & rosemary All served with crisp golden roast potatoes, seasonal greens & roasting gravy The atmosphere adds a lot too
Sounds good, Maria. We'll take a look.
Your mums!
Easy now...
Gorilla, hands down.
Good for brekkie, worth a try...
Agree about Gorilla, you never leave feeling hungry.
The venue itself is overated and cramped. Railway arch FFS! Poor bar service overall too.
Lime tree! Roast sirloin of beef an lots of veg!
Thanks
The Stoker's Arms in Didsbury. The Yorkshire puddings are heaven. Around £12-£14.
It's a chain though so by Mancon rules it can't be good.
1 Hearth of the ram 2 mr coopers 3 albert Square chop house 4 tnq 5 volta
Great suggestions these, we have two or three of these on the radar.
Parlour in chorlton is worth checking out
Cheers Nicky
Seconded
I went to the new Chalk place in East Didsbury last Sunday. Apart from the fact they served it in a tower (quite a feat of engineering) it was very good. Good roasties, pink beef and tasty gravy.
We reviewed this recently, as it happens. Not the roast, mind.
Bakerie - like a Roast dinner tapas and great for a feast with friends!
Thank you
Definitely DEFINITELY Gorilla's roast beef. Cooked pink, served with the most delicious gravy I've ever come across, proper roasties and really well treated veg. Oh and great Yorkshires.
Gorilla seems to be a popular choice.
Parlour in Chorlton. Trof in NQ. TNQ restaurant does a good multi-course deal, as does The Ox on Liverpool Rd. Also Superstore.
Ox has been mentioned in the office, as has Trof. That's 2 for Parlour and TNQ. First mention of Superstore. Thanks
Piccolino on Clarence Street does a fine Sunday Dinner. They recently changed the menu to a sharing for two people but if you ask they will serve the dish individually. Ask for extra gravy at the time of ordering
Third mention of Piccolino, looks to be a crowd-pleaser.
Ettore, Sebastian, Andrea and the staff look after you for sure.
A Sunday Roast Dinner isn't just about the dinner itself. Surroundings and atmosphere are equally important and contribute to the success of the meal itself. For that reason, there is no other alternative to The Wharf. Great food, great people, great bar, great decoration, great warmth (literally - a fire), great pub!
First mention of The Wharf but that could be a sound tip-off.
Volta's platters are excellent.
Volta's getting good press
Atlas Bar £5 with all of the trimmings.
Surely not?
Not sure when this would have been... we have ducked out of the Roast Rat Race and we offer a great Sunday Breakfast and Brunch..
When do you have DJ's? It's been a while.
Jem & I on School Lane Didsbury...Neary as good as my own!
Thanks Deidre.
Im a big fan of the George and Dragon in Great Budworth for a Sunday roast, especially at this time of year next to the open roaring fire.
Good one, Anon.
The Wharf is a good choice, well cooked and excellent location and atmosphere. Pushing a bit further North - the Freemasons Arms in Wiswell does a Sunday Lunch, a great and reasonable introduction to Steven Smiths excellent cooking. Not quite in the Greater Manchester circle, but worth the trip
We'd be tempted to stray slightly over the border for an outstanding roast, Chris. Thanks.
The Knott......Mmmmmmm
Castlefield has a few contenders.
Atlas Bar £5 with all the trimmings.
Still the Knott for me. Just make sure you're hungry....I've seen Mital from the Banyan having Sunday lunch in there. There's is a good un too.
Not sure if the vegetarian choice holds much sway but the nut roast I had at the Parlour last Sunday was one of the best I've ever had out of the house.
Choice matters, anon.
My birthday fell on a Sunday this year. Chose The Ox as it was well-priced for a family get-together. The quality of all the food was superb, beyond expectations, and they serve large portions too. Great value for money. Prices have risen since then, but I'd happily go back.
Ox has come up a number of times, Joan.
The Lowry Hotel does an excellent Sunday lunch, £20 for three pretty substantial courses. The horseraddish cream is / was to die for. Very pleasant staff also.
Would have missed that one, thanks.
AMEN to Parlour and Gorilla *licks lips* ... In addition, why not go a bit further afield and check out The Pointing Dog in Cheadle - Pork and crackling to DIE FOR.....Mmmmmm
Interesting...
The Parlour, with honourable mention to the deaf institute for their excellent yorkshires, veggie options and sides.
Deaf Institute is of the Trof and Gorilla gang.
The Parlour hands down; forget about all the other over cooked and tasteless lot.
The Parlour is getting a lot of noise. Taxi...
Malmaison Sunday brunch without a doubt. Top quality; well priced @ £20 for three courses including a buffet starter; ambiance is relaxed for such a nice place. Would highly recommend
Mal is usually a banker
Last time I was there we found the top of the sauce bottle in the dessert.....
Malmaison, best Sunday Lunch I have had since my grandma past away. Proper gravy also!!
Bakerie for the win ( the veggi option is v good too) and Montpellier's is divine!!!
Divine, eh?
Mr Coopers does the best roat in my view. Great price too. At the cheaper end comes the Kings Arms wich is another regular of mine for Sunday eating. Both great. NQR also worth a shout, and The Angel does a pretty amazing roast.
We've heard Angel is up there. Kings Arms on Bloom St?
The Angel? Spit roast more like! On a Saturday night that is :O
Is The Church Inn @ Mobberley out of bounds? Their Sunday lunch is amazing - all the trimmings and good portions, cooked well. The roast beef is £14.95. Their puds are also very good.
Erm you must be posh and not from 'round these parts coz you said 'puds'. WTF Cheshire person?
Depends on how good...
Had a really nice sunday lunch at the English lounge last week and the place was full! we struggled to get in! The Carvary at The John Gilbert is also fab value for money at £9.25 and the meat is always lovely.
English Lounge? My oh my...
Really enjoyed the roast at Superstore recently. Nice relaxed atmosphere too.
They made it into our Best of Brekkies. Great place.
Another vote for Piccolino.
Perhaps but he's prone to telling lies which in turn makes his nose grow.
We'll ask Geppetto if he can play out.
The Angel does a delicious roast. V reasonably priced too.
But the place is full of idiots and "locals".
Few notches for Angel here.
Chicken
Mmmm I loves me chicken. Talking of which, I'm surprised nobody on Mancon has mentioned This and That restaurant's Sunday curried roast chicken special.
Straight to the point.
Whim Wham Cafe for me
First one for WhimWham
Lime tree Bollington £13.95 great lamb beef and poussin!! Good breakfast also
Ooh poussin
Been compiling my own one of these for a while! So far, way ahead of all others is 'Superstore'. Its a two or three course meal for £14.50 or £18(?) ish with subtle flavour combinations (the roast belly pork with fennel and apple accompaniment is to die). Add a fruity glass of red or a hungover OJ and lemonade, it makes for not only a lovely venue to while away a Sunday arvo, but a scrum plate of food that is worth every penny. Let me know when you agree! Bekah x
Another one for Superstore.
Volta in Didsbury by a country mile
It's on the go-to list...
Since when did Withington become Didsbury?
sometime in the 13th century.
Anon; Volta couldn't be more in West Dids if it tried?!
Sorry Suzanne & Anon; I thought Volta on Burton Road was next to Withington Community Hospital. Don't believe the hype, Burton Road is Withington no matter what the estate agents say.
Rosylee in the NQ does a lovely roast, which is very good value at £19.95 for three course. My favourite however is The Wharf - great atmosphere, great food and because I can bring my dog with me.
The Wharf seems popular.
Rosso !
Superstore do a fantastic Sunday roast, I've already been trying out a variety of places, including Trof & Bakerie and out of those three Superstore are a landslide ahead.
agree but shush, don't tell everyone!
Superstore has a legion of fans
Nutters in Rochdale does a decent (and great value) Sunday lunch.
Nutters is a good'un
The Oxnoble on Liverpool road. Great value, quality gravy and I live around the corner!
Few for the Ox now
Highly recommend The Knott at the end of Deansgate, delicious roast and great value too!
How much?
The Blue Pig in Northern Quarter definitely.
Couple for the pig
Electrik in Chorlton does the best Sunday dinner, a platter for two (£23) consists of roast beef, half roast chicken, pork, beautifu veg, roasties, mash and possibly the best stuffing I've tasted with lashing of gravy. Much better than The Parlour in my opinion.
Volta and Electrik doing well for the Unabombers, they can't have two though...
Hawksmoor (when it arrives)
Very true
Gorilla! Without a doubt. I didn't really rate The Blue Pig roast.
Gorilla is a must-try it seems
Marble Arch pub.
Check
Tnq and damson media city both do amazing Sunday lunches and they are great value, definitely the best in town. On the other hand I had Sunday lunch at the met in west didsbury today and it was crap! Really bland and not great value for money, plus the veg was terrible and really overlooked.
Nods to tnq and Damson
My favourite is the Blue Pig in NQ, delicious...
Mixed reviews of the Pig
Annies for me, failing that one of the Chop houses
First for Annies, Chop Houses are bankable
Whim Wham is the best, followed by Mr Coopers
Really?
If Chester isn't too far out then I had a wonderful roast at Joseph Benjamin a few weeks ago. If it is then I'd say the ox does a good roast (albeit I've since looked up it's hygiene rating and discovered it was a 1 :-s) hearth of the ram and also eagle and child in ramsbottom are very good. The wharf is very good and I recommend the cheese board for dessert there!
The Salford Arms no doubt is the best kept secret in town, we had a choice of 3 meats (cooked to perfection)which came with handmade Yorkies & lard-roasted potatoes. Our vegan friend had a slow roasted sage pumpkin roast & my oh my was it delicious best of all it cost just £7.95 each - & the service was Top-Notch!!!COULDN'T BELIEVE IT!
Parsnip
Hearth of the ram is delicious
Agreed
Volta, mr coopers, palour 3 great roasts, good ingredients and good value
It often gets overlooked but I've never had a roast better than those at The English Lounge. (Parlour also good)
That was lottie btw - hiya
Fishermans Retreat, Ramsbottom. Plenty of tender cow and real meaty gravy. All for 12.50
Recently had a fabulous roast dinner at The Old Wellington near Manc Cathedral.
Tried Superstore in the NQ on Sunday (from the comments above) and loved every bit of it.
The Ox, Liverpool Road do AMAZING SUNDAY ROASTS! Great price for under £16 for 2 courses. The pub is a gastropub and makes the sunday dinner to perfection! Nicely cooked beef, beautiful chicken, huge crunchy outside and soft in the middle yorkshire puds, rustic veg and to-die-for roasties. Desserts are amazing too! The atmosphere of the place is lovely, warm and friendly. Highly recommended.
1. Nutters, it's delicious, 2. Church inn mobberly 3. Parlour
Looking forward to this article. Not sure if it's feasible but could be useful to note which venues need advance booking?
Best ever rose'n'bowl stacksteads delicious! The carved joints are wonderful
I recently had a very nice sunday lunch at Browns with the in-laws, nice atmosphere and pianist too
Ox Noble
The Volunteer in sale m33, sunday roast £3 yes you have read right, and its delicious beef or chicken
I'm planning to take the family out to celebrate my Sons 18th and a Sunday Lunch seems the best option to please all ages, looking for somewhere with the atmosphere for the 18 yr old though, after all it is his day... Can anyone recommend somewhere suitable for this occasion. Thanks
