Sole Closes For Reincarnation

The NQ fine dining place to re-position

Published on June 12th 2012.

Sole Closes For Reincarnation

CONFIDENTIAL wandered to Sole on Turner Street a week ago and found it closed. We tried again on Saturday. Same result.

Oh no we thought. A promising and aspirational fine dining venue had bitten the dust. Big shame.

Sole will reopen in four weeks time into a more accessible dining venue, with less of the fine dining aspect.

But we were premature. Sole is to be reincarnated.

Adam Draper, the restaurant manager, told us: "Sole will re-open in four weeks time into a more accessible dining experience, with less of the fine dining aspect and more a robust down to earth feel in line with the general Northern Quarter ambience. The food was doing well but the more informal aspects less so - such as the bar in the basement - and we feel we need to broaden our audience in that direction."

But will the fishy emphasis go?

"No," says Draper. "In fact we've just bought a lobster tank, so we still have a focus on fish although the menu will be much broader than previously. Not everything has been settled yet, there are still decisions to be made."

Interesting change of direction that. The location couldn't have helped in terms of fine dining, Turner Street is a little lost. But at least  there is some salvation for what Confidential thought was a lost Sole.

It would have been nice if Sole could have informed those customers who had bookings, rather than leaving them to turn up to find the restaurant closed without so much as a note of explanation in the window.

I was informed via email and phone call personally by the GM. Very impressed actually that they thought of their customers first!

Hi, that's not good that no one informed you of the closure!

I'll chuck the administrator in the lobster tank when I see him!!!

I'm the new manager here.

I'd like you to come to "SoLita"
South of Little Italy, when we open in less than 4 weeks, we are more than happy to
get you in to the launch party to say sorry!

It's being rebranded as SoLita - South of Little Italy - will be serving such goodness as pulled pork shoulder, mac n cheese and a bone marrow and chuck steak burger!

I've heard the new manager is a guy named Tony Del Spin, this has to be the best name in Manchester.

NAFI :( Soles food was good, but I didn't return as the people sat on the small windowsill outside the venue smoking were off-putting, as was the pumping music from downstairs and the bad language shouted through the doors, presumably en route to the loo. I felt it would have worked better with the restaurant downstairs. Won't be going again if it's bloody italian! :(

It's not going to be an Italian, the name refers to its location only ie 'South of Little Italy' not its food or theme!!!!
