Grill on New York Street is open

Confidential samples the new ‘Grill’ and likes it

Grill on New York Street is open

GRILL ON NEW YORK street is open and banging the punters through.

After its transformation from the well-regarded but usually deserted Grado, the re-invention of the New York Street venue has given the site a boost in popularity.

All this was good with the mushroom, the fritters and the Chateaubriand exceptional. As usual these places define the best in mid-range dining

Building on the well-established and slick model of sister restaurant Grill on the Alley, the New York Street restaurant offers a menu of brisk delights with splashes of luxury. You get top cuts of meat, a good selection of fish, salads, risottos and always the best oysters in the city. Gordo and Schofield, swear by them.

Given the popularity of the place, it seems already that this menu is a more understandable proposition than the upmarket tapas Grado offered along with its expensive mains.

Casual Confidential visits, including one on the opening night, involved samplings of the following.

Chestnut Portobello mushroom (£5.75) with poached egg, asparagus and tarragon butter, beef carpaccio (£7.50), with asparagus and truffle oil, Chateaubriand for two (£52), grilled fillet served with chips, French beans and béarnaise sauce. Dessert came as apple fritters (£4.75) with toffee cream and cinnamon.

All this was good with the mushroom, the fritters and the Chateaubriand exceptional. As usual the Grills define the best in mid-range dining.

The decor has been darkened, not altogether successfully.

Confidential preferred the lighter hues of Grado. Of course when the memory of the latter place fades nobody will care. Also some of the wording is odd on the menu – ‘Fresh chips’ for instance. Honestly dear Grill people, we really do assume that you don’t use McCain’s.

We’ll sneak in for a full review soon, but so far the going is good at Grill on New York Street – wisely the best of the staff have been kept on from Grado too.

Have a go, see what you think.

P.S. Many of the fabulous Spanish wines, ports and sherries which did so much to make Grado a worthwhile visit remain for sale while stocks last.

Grill on New York Street is at New York Street, Piccadilly, City, M1 4BD. 0161 238 9790.

I ate at the Grill on the 30th March for lunch, great service and great food. Piccadilly has been in need of a bit of class for a long time!

Offer................Wot Offer????

colem6April 7th 2011.

The offer is 50% off food. The offer is available through their website but you have to search to find it...
Dined there on Tuesday. Not sure about the makeover, think they need to make a bit more of a statement on a street where they are the sole restaurant/business opening in the evening.
For the food I would say a 6/10, starter Goats Cheese Salad with Honey and Figs was good as was the Bread and Butter Pudding with Ginger Ice-Cream. The Classic Steak Frites was okay but should have been the highlight.
Comfy booths and good service but once the 50% off ends...mmm, not sure.

For some reason the link gets deleted when its posted on here. Seems a bit petty when its an official offer provided by the restaurant.

Ate there last night and was very impressed. never been to Grill on The Alley so can't compare, but both the lamb and the steak frites was some of the best food i've had in a long time. Had the sticky toffee pudding for dessert which had a stray bit of onion / apple skin / plastic or sometyhing in the middle, but the staff were very apologetic!

Funkin fantasticApril 12th 2011.

Absolutely superb. Go while the offers still on though otherwise it is a bit of a special occasion place but can't fault any of it. Ate venison, lamb and steak (between us, not each) and it was the best food I've had in ages. Been to Room and Browns in the last few weeks, similar prices, and this wipes the floor with both of them. Desserts need improving but starters and mains were faultless. Service was exceptionally knowledgable and polite if a little sparse at times. Just google for the offer you'll find it easy enough.

We went in on Monday 11th April to take advantage of the 50% off deal. We were in 2 minds as to whether we would ever go back after this visit.
We had the Chateaubriand and it was absolutely wonderful. The service was perfect. Just enough attention without being overbearing. The waiter was completely unpretentious which I do find a particular problem in lots of Manchester restaurants. The restaurant itself was airy and light and you did not feel to close to the people next to you(another annoying feature of some restaurants). We will definitely be going back.
