It's a kind of magic

Illusions Magic Bar puts on open mic night for aspiring magicians

Published on January 21st 2011.

It's a kind of magic

Aspiring magicians, mentalists and escapologists now have a place to practise their slippery knots, sleights of hand, and spoon-bending in front of a live audience.

Wednesday night at Illusions Magic Bar in the Printworks is open mic night for magicians. It's an opportunity for would-be Derren Browns to perfect their patter and their powers of deduction. It's also a good way to meet and learn from other members of the magic community.

If you've got a few tricks up your sleeve, why not go along after 7pm to see if you can impress strangers as much as you impress your friends. Or just drop by as an audience member to see the japes. Illusions is a free-entry bar with a friendly, relaxed atmosphere (a magical feat in itself considering its location). There's magic on every night but it's of the non-intrusive, non-annoying kind.

You won't have a Paul Daniels-type sauntering up to your table to mesmerise you with a disappearing coin. The magicians let you go to them if you want to be wowed. If you don't want to, just settle back with a drink or two as you would in a non-magical bar.

Which brings us to another big reason we like Illusions: the magic wand cocktails. These giant test tubes of fruity cocktail are a very silly idea that invariably leads to a very silly night out. You need a gang of friends to indulge in one of these – the medium and large wands hold 4.5 pints and 7 pints respectively. Find out what happened when Smudge Jones tried to drink one by himself here.

And if you like open mic nights of the more traditional kind, go to Illusions on Mondays when musicians replace the magicians. The good thing about this open mic night is that it starts at 5.30pm – so you can drop in after-work. It attracts an eclectic bunch of performers. Take an instrument if you want to play, or make use of the grand piano that they have there. As ever, it's free entry for everyone.
