FIRST LOOK: Crazy Pedro's Pizza Parlour Opens (Sort Of)

Black Dog's latest bar/restaurant opens for a trial run before the BIG launch on 27 November

FIRST LOOK: Crazy Pedro's Pizza Parlour Opens (Sort Of)

BARELY had the paint dried on Manchester's new tequila den - XOLO on New Wakefield Street - before the Black Dog Ballroom lot were at it again.

Crazy Pedro's threw a pre-opening opening party last night on the city centre's Square With No Name (above Liar's Club on Motor Street).

"We're still perfecting the pizzas, trying out different doughs and flavour combinations. So we're asking people to pop in over the next couple of weeks before we properly launch to try the pizzas out and give us some feedback."

There's more tequila, more mezcal, more luchadores, but this time they've added pizzas the size of Big Foot's frisbee.

"They're massive," Black Dog co-owner Jobe Ferguson told us during a mini-tour. "Around sixteen inches which makes them bigger than Papa John's XXL."

The pizza ovens certainly look the business...

"State-of-the-art these ovens," Ferguson beams. "We're still perfecting the pizzas, trying out different doughs and flavour combinations.

"We're asking people to pop in over the next couple of weeks before we properly launch to try the pizzas out and give us some feedback."

Before the full opening on Thursday 27 November Crazy Pedro's will be opening sporadically from 6pm until 8pm to give customers a taste of the place and the pizzas - keep an eye out on @CrazyPedros.

The pizza menu, which includes the 'Wacko Jacko' (pepperoni, jerk chicken, pineapple and cashew nut) and 'Pedro's World Famous Hotdog Pizza' (beer-soaked Frankfurter, cheese, crispy Onions, French’s mustard and ketchup), starts at £3 for a slice (1/6 of a whole pizza) to £15 for the full sixteen inch works.

Rumour has it Pedro's are also toying with a palm-sized calzone for £5. The bar goes heavy on the tequila and mezcal - the frozen margarita house-special will have you climbing the walls and your tooth enamel trembling like a ******** Black Dog.

"We don't want people to think this is ONLY a takeaway place," Ferguson told us. "We're a fully stocked bar, a sit-down pizza restaurant or a late-night grab-and-go takeway. Whatever you want us to be."

Crazy Pedro's will be fully open on Motor Street (above Liar's Club) from Thursday 27 November between midday and 4am.

Keep an eye on @CrazyPedros for more.

Here's how Pedro looks...

It was an open invite according to their Twitter account. I'm looking forward to checking this place out anyway, because it's about 2 minutes from where I work and the food at Black Dog-related places is usually good.

Dude, where's my pizza?

There are some excellent places opening around Leeds and Liverpool, we get more of this rubbish from the usual operators. Where are all the independents with interesting ideas?

AnonymousNovember 13th 2014.

Not sure what happened to my invite - I have an ironic beard, thick rimmed glasses and 20/20 vision. Perfect hearing but I like to show off and wear a hearing aid. Also thinking of trying leg braces - on a hipster, folkey, need a shower and a scrub, ironic tip, obviously.

Sixth photo down on the main bunch, the beardy man talking to Adidas top man looks as though he regrets his tight pony tail hair idea as it makes his eyes water.

Far too many burger and pizza places now. We do need some independants and some different ideas. Not that I don' love a good pizza but I go to Slice in Stevenson Square were they are more authentic. So authentic you get lots of Italian people going there so they must be goo

I do like Slice a lot . Although the fact it gets Italians to go doesn't really prove it's good to be honest, I know a few Spaniards who love El Rincon even though it's pretty terrible whenever I go in.

If they were so serious about the quality of the pizza, they would have recruited pizza chefs and developed the product weeks if not months ahead of the launch. They were still advertising for chefs up to the night of the soft opening. Nutter's chefs helped them out.

I guess it probably won't be the food that sells this place but whether it's trendy to go there, but you're right, if you're selling pizzas, make sure your pizzas taste good..

Ply will show how it's done when it opens next month.

Let's give the lads a chance, eh?

Schofield: can't you delete most of the above utterly pointless comments and trolling? It's getting tedious now for us mere mortals. This poor place has barely opened and in true ManCon style, the trolls with no life or friends tear it apart. (Name and address withheld, ha ha.)

First visit........ Possibly the last... Food was good but the service was appalling. Sat at a table that was reserved with an hour to spare, we were told we could order food and beer as long as we left at 7. Not a problem. At 6.40 a bartender and said 'you have to leave I need to wipe the table, whilst my friend was finishing her last slice. I asked if we could finish our food and was abruptly told' you have to leave'... Nice move! Needless to say we'll take our after work food & booze craving's somewhere a tad more hospitable!

Would comment that we had a pretty terrible experience here when we went on a lunchtime and ordered 2 pizzas between 4 of us. First pizza arrived after 30 mins but, alas, half the Hawaiian pizza topping had gone AWOL. After a further 30 minutes of waiting it became apparent that the second pizza wasn't going to make it so we obtained a refund and went to trusty Katsouris Deli. To be fair to them it was the first week, but it wasnt busy when we visited and we concluded that there was a fundamental problem with the concept, particularly with the seemingly simple task of removing the pizzas out of the oven in one piece. We observed the pizza chef hacking away at several pizzas in a desperate struggle to extract them from the oven and some appeared to be being thrown in the bin - maybe they have sorted out this problem now? Also, serving over priced and below par beer in a small red plastic cup may be ok for undiscerning college jocks in America, but not good enough this side of the pond! Can appreciate restaurants have teething problems in first week or two but the service and customer experience was poor on our visit. Hope they sort it out because they need to.

'Bore off haters!!!!'? You must be the woman in the photo that's wearing the thick rimmed spec's and red top.
