Blackdog Ballroom

Launch night at the Northern Quarter's new concept bar

Published on October 30th 2009.

Blackdog Ballroom

Blackdog Ballroom is a new concept created by Ross Mackenzie, of One Central Street, Sankey’s and basement club The Purple Pussycat, and Jobe Ferguson, the man behind the success of the Northern Quarter Restaurant & Bar. With its late night gourmet burgers and pizzas, draught beers, pool tables and secret rooms policed by password the venue opened its doors at the end of last week.

The name is inspired by Churchill’s infamous ‘black dog’ depressive moods in an attempt to create the ultimate environment to lighten even the darkest of days.

Located underneath Afflecks Palace, previously inhabited by Isobar and Club North, the space has recently housed some of the UK’s best DJs and live music acts in its temporary guise as pop-up bar BLINK.

The builders have now gone and left behind them a dramatic interior with décor that seeks to evoke the atmosphere of the Big Apple’s infamous speakeasys with dark wooden paneling and long distinguished bars.

Ross Mackenzie said: “The Northern Quarter is a thriving community with a variety of different venues but we feel there is space for something with the personality of the Blackdog Ballroom. Our inspiration comes from the speakeasy style and secrecy of the unique bars found in NYC such as Employees Only and PDT. The name is inspired by Churchill’s infamous ‘black dog’ depressive moods in an attempt to create the ultimate environment to lighten even the darkest of days.”

Jobe Ferguson added: “With simple, gourmet food and great quality drinks we wanted to re-create the desirability of New York’s underground bar and diner scene, whilst keeping it accessible. What’s more both Ross and I live both in the heart of the Northern Quarter right next to the Blackdog and hope to create a new local which will become the heart and soul of the scene for both ourselves and our fellow residents.”

Opening times are Monday – Sunday, 12pm – 4am. See the gallery below for pictures from the opening night.

nothing special about this place... other than the bird on the left in the final picture. She is hot.

Why doesn't this article say whether the bar is any good or not? It's just an advert.

This is not a review it's a picture gallery and description. Dear readers reviews are those features with scores and ratings.

JohnTheBrief - you need to get daan to da Gourmet Burger Kitchen. The Wild Boar burger with added Chorizo is like having sex whilst drinking beer and having it to hard house all at the same time. Simply...boo-tiful

So is this why the Number One (ex One Central Street) is so quiet now - everyone's gone to this new place???

How loud was the music? It'd be lovely to have a bar in town that I could go to with friends and actually be able to hear them speak.

Hmm, they really shouldn't have given you the picture of the two orange chav girls to publish, it's put me right off going. Printworks/Deansgate Locks crowd comes to NQ eh?

Richard - having been there I can tell you it is a really nice bar, we spent most of the night down at the pool tables! I thought they crammed a few too many people in later on in the evening though

Great venue, nice, fresh clean and plenty of space(s) to offer... excellent. Just what us City Centre inhabitants have been waiting for... for a long while!

Agreed. Went last friday for pre-opening. Nice venue. Not earth shattering but canny. Purple Pussycat is still my favourite late night bar though but that more for dancing. This place will be good for relaxing, chatting etc. Hope they keep their feet on the ground though...can easily see this place doing a Deansgate and becoming up itself...sounds like the management have a lot of kudos though to prevent this :-)
