Argyles reinvents

Ask someone in Chorlton to describe Argyles and they’ll probably tell you it’s an old name on the local map that hasn’t quite caught up with the younger competition. That is, perhaps, until now.

In a bid to stand out from the crowd Manchester based artists Bomb Masters have been commissioned to create a beer garden mural alongside bespoke blackboards. The unique work is set to be unveiled in time for the celebrations this coming weekend.

Over the past five months the Barlow Moor Road bar has been gradually undergoing a transformation. The changes include new cocktail, locally sourced food and deli menus and come as a result of new management at the old bank.

This Thursday 13 May, will see the new menus launched, with 50 per cent off all food, substantial reductions on drinks and performances from local bands. This is followed by everything from Echo and the Bunnymen to Aphex Twin on the Friday night soundsystem, with Saturday afternoon offering a BBQ and the return of a new weekly shopping boutique.

In addition to the new food on offer there is now a selection of over 20 world beers alongside draught lagers and ales, and around 80 individual spirits line the freshly restocked bar. Weekly events will now include a Tuesday night quiz, live music every Thursday and an eclectic Friday night DJ set to welcome in the weekend.

“I'm trying to re-fresh interest by giving people what they want at a price they want to pay for it. Real food and drink served by real people in an un-pretentious, casual yet professional environment where everyone’s welcome,” said Matthew McArdle, Argyles manager. “With good local music, great food and one of the biggest drinks cabinets around we’re ready to show good people a good time.”

The problem with Argyles was the cocktails. By having complex cocktails which take ages to make, the queues started building up during busier periods. You could wait for ages whilst a group of 5 people all get served different cocktails.

Couple that with the fact it is a little bit soulless in there, it just didn't work.

The food was always spot on though.

Sort out the waiting times on those busier evenings and I (along with many others who have complained about this) will return.

Adam's comment is spot on. Waiting times at the bar due to people ordering cocktails are horrendous.

It's not the complexity of the cocktail, it's more often the skill, or lack of skill, of the bartenders

Proof seem to have it a little more under control but maybe that is because its smaller than Argyles?
