Red's Brunch: Get Your Huevos Early

WEEKEND BRUNCH from Reds, what to expect?

After dining at Fazenda in Leeds the night before and eating a whole cow and most of a lamb I wasn't exactly looking forward to a vast breakfast from another Leeds-created operation.

The beans and chili and cheese, the tortilla and the eggs were fabulous though, something to prop the day ahead upon.

You see, Red's does big food, very big American food, with a specialist kitchen full of specialist equipment producing eye-watering US excess for the hordes that pack the place of an evening.

I love the beef long (check my review here) but gorging myself at eleven on a Saturday morning was a daunting prospect. Fortunately, Red's sexy neon nun answered a prayer and directed me to the heuvos rancheros at £7.95.

This is a splendid start to the day (main picture above).

A couple of grilled eggs on a lightly fried and subtle tortilla, with the star of the show being the pit beans and tomato chili and cheese. The coriander salsa and guacamole offered entertaining mess.

The beans and chili and cheese, the tortilla and the eggs were fabulous, something to prop the day ahead upon.

Other brunchers at the table enjoyed the breakfast donut stack (£7.95), Southern breakfast biscuit (£5.95) and the simply huge Red's country fry at £8.95.

Most of the flavour combinations worked, that classic US blend of sweet and sour. The smoked sausage was a success with the 'biscuit' and the black pudding and hollandaise worked for the stack.

The country fry was better with pit beans again, the smoked Texas sausage and mushrooms performing a treat. My son ordered this and, for reasons still unexplained, when asked how he wanted his eggs replied, 'boiled'.

Reds complied and therefore the dish presented to Oliver looked distinctly odd. But the egg was a good 'un, cooked runnily well.

The shakes were excellent too, with the Howdy Doo Shake (£4.95), peanut butter and fresh banana, the clear winner.

Couple of caveats.

The 'biscuit' or scone of the Southern breakfast biscuit is way too dry, maybe give that one a blast of guacamole to loosen it up. And the coffee needs a kick up the jacksie, it wasn't rich or full enough.

That said I'll be back for the huevos rancheros, start my weekend days with a blast.

Reds is far better than livebait. A great addition to the restaurant community of Manchester.

@Rinkydink You must be all psyched about Five Guys opening in the Trafford Centre? How does Red's to Applebee's? Miss the quality of Cracker Barrel or Denny's?
