SUBTLE, but effective changes have been going on at All Star Lanes (ASL). Starting with the entrance, the bar has been opened out, giving good light during the day and a feeling of freshness. Not that it was stuffy before; it’s just that it feels more ‘right’ than it did before.

The changes wrought here really up the game for All Star Lanes; if you are viewing the venue just for bowling, you’re making a mistake.

Gordo has been invited by the ASL team to try out the new menu, designed by Ashley Clarke the exec chef. It’s being rolled out in Manchester prior to it landing in London, which is definitely a pleasant change.

ASL, apart from being a great bar and tip-top bowling alley, are very good with their restaurant offering, Gordo rated it highly on a scored review.

Img_7307Bacon PopcornThe first thing out of the traps was bacon popcorn (£3). Dribbled with maple syrup and sprinkled with fresh-fried bacon bits, Gordo was having problems already. Too good, he was forced to ask the chef to remove it halfway through. It’s definitely one to share. Anyone doing the whole thing needs shooting for gluttony.

Smoked mac and cheese croquettes (£5.50) hummed with flavour from being smoked gently but effectively, served with a roast onion and balsamic dip, a good sharpener to combat the smooth creaminess of the headline ingredient. The salt beef croquettes (£6) were outstanding, with a deli mustard dip on the side. This was a Gordo favourite.

The maple bacon cheeseburger (£10.50) came with Monterey jack cheese and maple cured bacon, the patty just on the pink side - a great, juicy, happy piece of kit this. The bun was well received as it wasn’t overly sweet even though of the brioche variety.

Img_7325NYC Salf Beef ReubenAn NYC salt beef Reuben looked a crowd pleaser, although not to Gordo’s taste; he can tell you lot that it looked the part for lovers of the weirdness of sour stuff. It had pickles, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and mustard on rye bread.

BBQ baby back ribs (£18.50) could easily serve three people and was Gordo’s favourite from the original scored review, the three hour shoulder of pork (£14.50), as well as being partnered with Boston baked beans, had the addition of a good smoked mash. The chargrilled chicken salad (£6.50) needs crisper salad, being paired with lambs lettuce does it no favours, considering the other ingredients, amounting to the tastiest chicken salad in the whole wide world. Well, maybe in Manchester…

Img_7338Blueberry Cheesecake & OreosBlueberry cheesecake jar (£5.50), with Oreo cookies is another dangerous delight, whilst oatmeal and peanut butter fudge cakes (£5.50) along with peanut brittle and chocolate sauce was a close second.

The changes wrought here really up the game for All Star Lanes; if you are viewing the venue just for bowling, you’re making a mistake. It’s a go-to gaff for fun, American-style dining delivered with quality.
