Things to Do This Weekend

Family - The Manchester Picnic 2012

Following the success of last year’s massively successful picnic which attracted over 15,000 visitors, the Manchester Picnic returns this year invading Piccadilly Gardens with a mouth watering selection of food from around the world. With a representative from every continent serving food from 11 until 6 there will be something for everyone during this three day food extravaganza. Accompanying the delectable delights will be music from Nando’s Nanockers, vintage DJs as well as children’s entertainment on the Sunday in the form of a teddy bear’s picnic hosted by Baby Ballet’s Twinkle the Bear. The event flyer can be downloaded here

Family - Disney Live! presents Mickey’s Magic Show

Everyone’s favourite gigantic rodent is taking residence in The Lowry Theatre this weekend and he’s bringing his oversized entourage with him. Amongst his coterie is a world class illusionist who will be recreating the magic of classic Disney films with help from a host of familiar faces including Goofy, The Mad Hatter and Donald Duck. Chock full of the saccharine sweet life affirming cheeriness one would expect from the fun crazed crew this is a guaranteed crowd pleaser provided the crowd are too young to have seen Toy Story 2 in the cinema. Tickets are available here.

Franny is born and bred Mancunian and a veteran tourer who has blown crowds away up and down the country. Theatre - Folksy Theatre present Much Ado About Nothing

Spurred by the success of last year’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Folksy Theatre will be returning to Walkden Gardens this Friday to recreate another of The Bard’s most beloved comedies - Much Ado About Nothing. Families are invited to pitch up with picnics, blankets and camping stools in the beautiful surroundings of the park to witness the dynamic mishaps and misunderstandings of four hapless lovers Benedick, Beatrice, Hero and Claudio. The play takes place at 7 o’clock and tickets can be bought here.

Sport - Triathlon Live in Exchange Square

In conjunction with Team GB’s triathlon attempt this weekend the Olympic Live site in Exchange Square will be transformed into a miniature triathlon site with an ‘endless pool’, exercise bike and a special treadmill. Visitors, whether members of a triathlon club or not, are invited to test their mettle on the equipment as Team GB strive for a medal on the big screen. Additionally a tennis court will be set up so sports enthusiasts can play along during the tennis final and an athletics track is being laid out in time for the first athletic events. For those who would rather leave the sport to the specialists the Hope and Glory pop-up bar is in a prime location from which to watch the events.

Food - The Great Wall, the real menu

After our story about the Tale of Two Menus this week there's only one choice get down to the Great Wall and have the jellyfish dish, followed by the chicken with the wood ear fungus. Absolutely lovely, and authentically exotic. For the full story and address details click here.
