Speaker’s Corner

BOOM chika chika Thbbbppt UHUHUHUHUHUHUH. If you’re wondering if I have accidentally leant on my keyboard, you’d be mistaken. That is actually a written attempt at beatboxing. Not very effective though is it.

If you want the real deal, Contact Theatre is hosting an evening of oral artistry on Saturday 1 December from 8pm.

Don Letts, of Big Audio Dynamite, Dancehall Queen fame, returns in a new guise as artistic director of this spoken word theatrical experience. Six cutting edge lyricists including, human beatboxer Mad Flow will be backed by a house band.

Don Letts came to notoriety in the late 70s as the DJ that single handedly turned a whole generation of punks onto reggae. Don adopted the punk DIY ethic and begun to make his first film The Punk Rock Movie. It is the only documentary on the UK punk scene and featured the Sex Pistols, The Clash and many others.

Human Beatboxer extraordinaire, Madflow regularly performs high energy PA’s, showcasing his phenomenal beatboxing and MCing skills. In the past, Madflow has hosted artists such as fellow beatboxer Killa Kella, KRS One, Grandmaster Flash, world scratching champion Q-Bert and De La Soul.

Other artists include spoken word artist Malika Booker and poet/actor, Yurusa Warsama. Somehow they will be exploring themes such as the enslavement of women, modern day rituals, breaking the cycle of inherent racism and the entrapments of the media. Ambitious eh? And entertaining too we hope.
