Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company present City:zen

Contact Theatre present a pie inspired look at conflict. Confidential readers get special rate tickets to see the production

Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company present City:zen

City:Zen is as nice as pie. Literally. As dancer Kamala reminisces about home made sweet pumpkin pie underlying themes are revealed.

What about Dev for whom pumpkin is a spicy taste? What about José and Mandeep who’ll never agree about potatoes? And most importantly, when it’s a question of belonging in a new place, do you have to change everything, including the way you eat?

Shobana’s new work is all about fitting in, conflict and effort. Raw emotion and raw ingredients are cooked up by the pressure cooker of live performance.

With Orlando Gough’s snarling, thrumming score feeling like it has been forced out by Shobana Jeyasingh’s extreme moves, this is sound and movement exploring the far reaches of human experience, even as it reaches a zen moment of calm.

Dancers talk, dancers fight, dancers teeter on the brink. You won’t have seen anything like this before, but you’ll recognise the truth of it. You’ll come out shaken, stirred, broiled and caramelised having joined some of the best dancers in England on the journey of their life.
