It might be more than 2,000 years since it happened, but the nativity story is probably something that you’re a bit familiar with. But what if it happened now with all the restrictions on the people living in the Holy Land and the segregation wall which separates Palestine from Israel.
The multi-award winning, Al-Harah Theatre Company are going to attempt to recreate this in their new comedy-drama, Born In Bethlehem, showing at the Contact Theatre in Manchester on Saturday 19 April. The production is about a tour guide who, whilst giving tours around the streets of Bethlehem to tourists, hits on the idea of hiring two actors to re-enact the nativity story. However, the actors won’t stick to the script, and instead start referencing the contemporary lives of the modern day Palestinian people.
The event promises to be “spirited, funny and profoundly moving” and is directed to audiences all over the world, and trying to tell the story of real people.
The stories which feature in the play are all real accounts of events that take place daily in Palestinian cities, villages and refugee camps, which have been documented by international, Israeli, and local human rights organisations.
Al-Harah Theatre was established in January 2005, and through theatre they aim to “assist in building a civil society that emphasises human rights, democracy and pluralism.” They have received numerous awards across the Middle East and Europe.
Born In Bethlehem will be performed at the Contact Theatre on Oxford Road, Manchester on Saturday 19 April at 8.00pm. Tickets cost £10, and £6 concession - Confidential readers get that lower price.
