The University of Salford has joined forces with the British Science Association and BBC Research & Development to launch the ‘Musical Moods’ research project. It’s been launched as part of National Science & Engineering week and aims to produce a new way of classifying decades of BBC programmes.
The pioneering online experiment is the largest of its kind. It wants you to share your thoughts about part and present TV theme tunes and the moods you associate them with. After listening to five randomly selected TV theme tune clips, you’ll be asked to answer questions about the mood, genre and familiarity of the theme tune.
Once the data has been collected, the BBC’s computers will analyse the results and determine the emotions and moods that each theme tune evokes.
Talking about the benefits of the project, the University of Salford’s Professor of Acoustic Engineering Trevor Cox said “they [the public] will be helping us answer some really interesting research questions” in an area of study where there has been surprisingly little research.
If you want to take part in the experiment head to www.musicalmoods.org for more information.
