Manchester's TV history

Free exhibition at Urbis looks at 50 years of telly-making in the city

Published on November 3rd 2009.

Manchester's TV history

Manchester has long been known as the TV capital of the North with classic programmes such as Coronation Street, Cracker and Cold Feet coming out of the city.

Our landmarks and fictional inhabitants have been gracing the screens of the nation for half a century now. At a new exhibition in Urbis which opens on 4 November, the day the region's iconic Winter Hill transmitter switches to digital, Manchester's TV past, present and future will be explored.

The exhibition is called The Ghosts of Winter Hill – a reference to the fact that the hill is supposed to be haunted. It'll include rare archive images, contributions from significant figures in the region's TV industry, and showings of programmes including soaps, documentaries, dramas, and sports shows.

Our changing viewing habits and how TV has helped shaped the city's identity will be examined – and there'll be a section about what the future holds for the industry with the arrival of Mediacity and BBC North. Should make interesting viewing.
