Published on July 7th 2012.

Steps Taken, Pride Overflows

ORGANISERS of Manchester Pride, have announced that G-A-Y will be Steps to the Big Weekend festival, headlining the Gaydar Main Arena. Fresh from their reunion and Ultimate Tour, Claire, ‘H’, Faye, Lee and Lisa will playing a packed arena at the UK’s leading Pride event.

It’s a massive coup and the whole Village will be bouncing with the news."

Formed in 1997, Steps sold 20 million records, and achieved 14 consecutive Top 5 singles. They have won countless awards and had sell out tour after sell out tour all over the globe. They were the second most successful British pop group ever behind the Beatles (Is that really true? Wow. Ed.)

The group reformed in May 2011 for a four-part documentary series on Sky Living titled Steps: The Reunion.  A second Greatest Hits album, The Ultimate Collection released in October last year became the band's third UK number one album. Series 2 of the Steps Reunion titled Steps: On the Road Again began in April 2012, following the band as they embarked on a sell-out 22-date UK tour.

Manchester Pride chair, Vicken Couligian said “We are thrilled to welcome Steps to Manchester Pride. It’s a massive coup and the whole Village will be bouncing with the news. It’s a real boost for the festival and charity as we continue to raise funds for LGBT groups and charities in Greater Manchester.”

Manchester Pride Patron Antony Cotton added, “Steps have such huge appeal and we are delighted to welcome them to the Manchester Pride main stage. The crowd, I'm sure, will be singing, dancing and stepping along.”

Manchester Pride takes place from 17-27 August. Big Weekend tickets are still available at the Early Bird price of £15 until Sunday and are available at manchesterpride.com or by calling 0871 230 3450.

Thus perpetuating the ideal that all gay people like tacky, cheesy pop and reinforcing homosexual stereotypes.....Thanks Manchester pride
but no thanks I will be celebrating my individuality elsewhere away from immoral and greedy corporate sponsors such as Barclays who neither care or speak out for me!!

Is Anthony Cotton Manchesters resident gay spokesman? Hes bloody everywhere.

Is this a joke?

Are Steps the best headline act the so-called (self-proclaimed) 'UK's leading Pride event' can come up with?

They're past it "we need the money" has-beens.

This is embarrassing. "It's a massive coup" my @rse.

No, it's not a joke.
That's the UK's leading Pride Event as voted in the Pink Paper for the last few years.
I'm no fan either, but when they played arenas this year, they sold out. So they're hardly has-beens. And have a lot of gay fans, whatever you think of them.
And if they're not good enough for you, they're only the first act announced.

So who else have they got...Bonnie Langford

I despise Steps, but a lot of gays like them so I suppose the rest of us who don't fit into the stereotype will just have to put up with them.

It's absolute nonsense to say that this is a "massive coup" though - unless they are doing it for free. Which they won't be. More accurate would be "We've paid a lot of money to get Steps to perform". Rather than regurgitating the press release, Mancon should be asking those kinds of questions. Also, is Jeremy getting a cut?

Manchester Pride has been one of the few that has been very successful over the past few years. However, I'm informed by people "in the know" that the new lot running the show are making, shall we say, rather a lot of schoolboy errors and there are a lot of people fretting about it. There's a lot of questions that need answering.

I stand corrected on the 'self-proclaimed' comment, but still say they're has-beens, stepping onto the reformed-and-churning-out-the-old-stuff bandwagon, for as much dosh as they can gather while it lasts.

I await with bated breath who else will perform. Hazell Dean (showing my age)?

I've just about heard of one of t'other Main Arena acts, and that's only because they're a tribute group:

Björn Again
Louise Dearman
Scarletts Roses
Cleopatra Sol

Squirrel's question whether Jeremy G.A.Y. gets a cut is interesting, bearing in mind the ongoing controversy about the miniscule cut charities receive from Pride, compared to the huge profits made by so many.

It wouldn't be Pride without Hazel Dean! Think you're making valid points tblzebra, but Pride has raised a million quid for charity since 2004 - I don't think that is miniscule. A lot of the organisations rely on the grants they get and if Pride wasn't what it was, the money wouldn't be raised and lots of them would go out of business.
